Competition divisions

Full marks, Wolf! Yes, there's the two divisions of handicap competition plus a scratch prize at our Club Champs.

Thanks for clarification, as Wolf describes makes complete sense. The lowest gross is the club champion, it just wouldn't feel right if the lowest nett score was club champion (assuming there were lower gross scores).

Although even if it was purely a scratch competition, I still think it's nice to enter the club championship, even when realistically you have no chance of winning it. Hundreds of teams enter the FA Cup every year with no hope of getting to the final.

Our club championship is top 16 of 2 qualifying rounds then match play knockout over Mon Tues Thurs & Fri of the same week. Really good week. There also a hcap championship for higher guys

For straight forward medal or stableford singles comps we have either 2 or 3 divisions dependent on the number of players. The split is based upon the average number on players in each division base upon a handicap split.

The divisions are different for club comps and seniors comps ie division 1 club comps are up to 10 and seniors are up 15

I personally believe without divisions low handicap players would probably not get a look in, particularly in STBFRD comps, based upon most results. Most stableford comps are won with over 40 points in divisions 2 and 3 in the seniors section and Division 1 winners are usually under 40 points.

Yeah that's correct. Lowest gross is the club champion, although what he wins is called the 'Ferndown Salver' for some reason. The 0-14 net winner wins the 'Ferndown Plaque' and the 15-28 net winner wins the 'bronze medal'. Then runners up for each category.

Yeah, you're probably right there, although by paying the entrance fee I'd feel like I was literally throwing money away lol. At least in the FA Cup you actually earn money, from gate receipts! :D

I guess your club championship is for people who don't have a job or a family!

you play in the evening, well you do at ours, final is a friday night, teeing off at 6PM

a lot of golf played that week though, qualifying Sat and Sun Stroke play, then to 16 scratch play m/t/f match play, handicap is the same, but off the white still, where as the scratch is off the blue which is 300 yards longer. TBH unless you are scratch or better, you don't stand a chance as well have a fair few +handicap players

For medals we have three divisions, the handicap splits are set such that, on average a similar number of players are in each division....sure in some months we get a division that is low compared to the other two but over the course of a year it is reasonably equal. We pay out the top two in each division as a minimum, and depending on entries will sometimes pay out a third place as well. Prize values are the same for each division.

There are no divisions in Stablefords, but we do tend to pay out to 4th place as a minimum and, depending on field size, prizes may go down to as low as 7th place.

The total prize fund for any competition is in direct proportion to the number of entrants and rather than just simply increase the prize for 1st, 2nd 3rd we feel that the prize allocations should allow more folks to get some sort of reward (rather than just give out bigger and bigger prizes to fewer people)....so as the field size increases, yes we increase the funds for 1st ,2nd, 3rd but only to a certain level before we introduce a 4th place prize....then 1,2,3 and 4 get increased until there is space to introduce a 5th placed prize. It sounds complicated but in fact is dead easy and requires no administration effort as there is a laminated spreadsheet by the computer that simply tells the person processing the comp what prizes he is supposed to allocate depending upon entries.

As per Wolf's reply, we have two simultaneous comps. Best gross score is the club champion and there is a separate trophy for the handicap winner. All our other board events are winner takes all based on handicap

I was asking Orikoru. Are you a member at the same club?

No it's for people who are enthusiastic about golf and can play at 5pm after work. It's a great week. Dates are in the handbook for those with commitments who want to play to make arrangements. Final is on a friday night at 5pm, always have a turnout to watch it.

I can just imagine the conversation with my wife...
"I'm leaving work early today."
"Great. You played golf all weekend, you can put the kids to bed."
"Actually I'm playing golf after work."
"ok, tomorrow then."
"Er... I'm playing golf tomorrow too."

By the semi finals it would be a straight choice between the chance to get my name on a mahogany and a divorce. :ROFLMAO:

I was wondering about the rationale behind divisions for medals but no divisions for stableford.

Haha, brilliant. I think some people live in a different world - I only get home from work at about 6:40 on a typical day. Not much chance of fitting golf in then, much less for four days on the trot.

We tend to have 3 divisions for the normal monthly medal or stableford.

Cups/board comps there is only one winner.

Got to admit doesn't matter how enthusiastic I am about golf there's no way if I was. A member there I'd ever be able to compete in that, Mon, Tues & Weds I work till 8pm so would have to take holiday plus would have to ask the Mrs to take holiday on the Thurs and Friday in order for someone to be home with kids those evenings, so just to play in it I'd have to arrange a military style operation to juggle everything else and waste 3 days of my holiday and 2 days of Mrs Wolf's. I understand maybe it's a tradition but can only imagine a lot of guys have to juggle a lot to play especially as nowadays there aren't many 9-5 jobs especially with commuting.

all depends if you wanted to be club champion or not, but first you have to qualify to be having to play in the knock out stages. some clubs don't do this, some just straight stroke play. most scottish clubs would be stoke play to qual then match play, but of course to get your name on the board up here it has to be the scratch win to do so.;)

Most low guys in the club manage it, my wife has known I've played golf ever since I met her so she knows that's what I do, don't go out to the pub or anything, could be doing worse things. But yeah she's pretty understanding and actually encourages me to go and play in stuff, may enter open qualifying this year, will have a look when it falls

Got to admit I wouldn't want to be if its detrimental to my family life as this way would be, golf simply isn't as important.

Our one is a weekend one and has to be qualified for and that's no issue at all but a whole just wouldn't be possible, so fair to the guys that manage it.

Mine does to but as mentioned above with the kids and shuffling of both our jobs for me to do so for 1 week for a name on a board simply wouldn't be fair.

But full respect to you and the guys that manage it, I can imagine it is a fun week though.

If you go for qualifying make sure let us know how you get on and good luck
