Hi Blowup, (I cant help but smile when I tyoe your name in)

I think you are doing what all newbies do and that is not trusting the golf club to lift the ball into the air. I think you are SCOOPING the ball trying to get it up straight away. Put the ball in the centre of your stance and swing the club as freely as you would with your driver. Just remember and swing through the ball.

I have the problem of hitting my irons too high. Not sure if its the same for you but in my case it is caused by a steep angle of attack. I try and counter this with a smooth takeaway then hitting through the ball rather than at it.

I have a the same problem, looks like a cracking shot, rises like a dream then plummits. When I joined my club I got 3 free lessons with the pro. The reason I was given was that my backswing was to steep as was my follow through, in effect my club was following an oval profile. I need to concentrate on keeping my club as close to the ground for as log as possible on both the bacswing and follow through. The pro explained that I have to imagine my club head is in a very large saucer (ie creating a shallow curve). One thing he had me do is to take me thumb off the bottom hnd grip as it can be caused by to strong a grip on the right hand.

Useful drill to stop picking the club up too steeply - place another ball about a foot behind the ball you are going to hit. As you take the club back the idea is to push the second ball out of the way, this ensures a smooth low takeaway which helps you make a nice wide arc. Try and follow that same wide arc on the way back to the ball to hit lower powerful shots.
