So I went to a Callaway Demo day yesterday and while bashing some drivers, fairways and hybrids, got talking to the fitter about which clubs to have in the bag.
For the last 5 years I've been a 4 wedge man. The bag has looked like this :-
Driver
3 wood
5 wood/19deg rescue
23 deg hybrid
5-pw
50,54 and 58 wedges
Putter.

I've been feeling like I'm missing a longer club, often seem to be between clubs from 200 out or so. But putting a longer club in would mean leaving out a wedge and I like my choice of wedges.
Mr Callaway seems to think, based on the distances I was hitting and my ability that dropping the 3 and 5 woods for a 4 wood, bringing in a 7 wood and keeping the 23/24 degree hybrid would cover the gaps and still leave me with my beloved wedge set-up.
Looks like I'm going to go with that suggestion and I wondered what everyone else's set-up is. Are you heavy on the long clubs or short ones? Any gaps? Have you got all 14 clubs?

At the moment I go Driver, 3 Wood, 18 hybrid, 5-SW, 47, 51, 60, putter.

I definitely find a use for all my wedges and would be somewhat lost without them.

I currently have
Driver
3 wood
3-pw
52,56,60
putter
was thinking of getting a 5 wood or a 2 hybrid and going pw, 54 58, and after today my 60 deg is looking like being melted down for scrap so possibility over the winter maybe! lol

Driver
4 Wood / 1 Iron / 2 Iron
3 - 9
PW (47), GW (51/52), SW (56), LW (59/60)
Putter

I hit the ball along way so don't struggle to get myself into range nearly all the time. Like having the 4 wedges but if I wanted to carry two of the longer clubs at the same time then I can easily manage without the SW. Its only useful out of heavy rough and sand so I just make sure I don't find any.

10.5 driver, 15.5 3 wood, 17 and 20 degree hybrid, 5 to PW, then the 52, 56, and 60, and a putter.

Sometimes the 5 iron has done 190, sometimes the driver does 100, the 20 out distances the 17, and the 20 will out do the driver though it'll rarely touch the 3 wood, but the driver has been known to go 250 plus!

Now which club do I use for 'xxx' yards. :D :D

I'd love to see a flightscope distance guide for my clubs.

When I say for my clubs, what I mean is 'me'. Nowt wrong with the bats, just the 'batee'! :D

It's hard to judge without knowing what distances you think you hit your long clubs that are already in the bag.

Since being on here I've noticed that some people who hit similar distances to me with some clubs are quite different with others.

Through a complete brain-melt I ended up with 15 clubs when I kitted myself out last year.
Driver, 3 wood, 19 hybrid, 3-PW, 52, 56, & 60.

I started off by dropping the 60 because I didn't want the gap at the longer end of the bag.
I might be deluded, but I 'think' my distances at the longer end (excluding driver) are 230, 215, 200, 190, 180 etc.

I played a game a couple of months ago when I decided I needed the 60 in the bag, so left out the 3 iron.
Sod's law, twice during that round I wanted to hit 200, so I choked down a bit on the hybrid and shortened the swing a bit and they worked out great.
So that's the way it's staying........ for now!

Sorry for the essay, I guess what I'm saying is yes, cover all the yardages, but it doesn't have to be with full shots with each club if you're comfortable taking 10 or 15 yards off a swing.

I'm as per my signature but feel there is some duplication between my 5W and 3H. The problem is I need the 5W for some of the par 3's off the whites as the hybrid doesn't get there but then utilise the hybrid more with approach shots and recoveries out of the rough.

I said when I went to the ping demo that they and a lot of other manufacturers are heading down the 4 wood route to compromise between a 3 and 5 wood and effectively free up a space in the bag. It's an interesting idea and would definitely help me.

I've got:

Driver

5 wood

3 hybrid or 3 iron... depends upon the day.

4-pw

52 (GW)

56 (SW)

60 (LW)

I've dropped the 3 wood as it's not going to cure my bad drive... a 5 wood might!!!

At the moment I go Driver, 3 Wood, 18 hybrid, 5-SW, 47, 51, 60, putter.

I definitely find a use for all my wedges and would be somewhat lost without them.

Somewhat confused here.

Driver, 3 wood, 18hy (which is a 2 iron) then a jump to a 5 iron to SW then 3 more wedges?
I make that 5 wedges and only one club between 3 wood and 5 iron? :D

Most of the time i'm play in windy conditions, so find the need for longer clubs.

Driver
3wood (13.5deg)
2 iron or 17 deg hybd
3-pw irons
51 and 56 wedge

Driver
3 wood
19* hybrid
4-pw
51+55* wedges
Putter.

Haven't decided on the 14th club yet. Possibly a 60* wedge....
I need some new wedges to be fair so might get 3 and stagger the lofts evenly.

As per my sig.

If I have 200 yards to the hole, I can take my 3 iron. Any more than that and I have two options.

If it's a par 5, lay up and try to play for a safe 5 (or 6, or 7) if it's a par 4, I cry myself to sleep at night because it usually means I've hit another bad drive.

I could do with one more wedge for pitching into the green but I use my PW around the green for chipping, unless I need to flop one onto the green over a hazard...Which usually results in me thinning my LW into the hazard :D

I have

Driver
3 wood
4hybrid
5-pw
56 wedge
Putter

As I've only been playing 10 months you can see that I have plenty of gaps in there at both the top end and bottom end, but it works out ok 90% of the time.

I think next I'll sort out my wedges, certainly need a gap wedge, possibly get a 58/60 wedge too.

Somewhat confused here.

Driver, 3 wood, 18hy (which is a 2 iron) then a jump to a 5 iron to SW then 3 more wedges?
I make that 5 wedges and only one club between 3 wood and 5 iron? :D

As it stands, my long game is decidely ropey but I have decent distance for someone of my handicap with my irons, I'm generally a club longer than most.

I aim to work on my long game over the winter and probably invest in a 4i for my set and also a 5w, with the 3w probably being a permanent loss from the bag.

I've spent much of this year trying to tighten up my short game and I helped this by giving myself many options around the green. I'm seriously considering ditching the SW at certain courses as I find it too unwieldy.

As per my sig I have a driver, 3, 5wood
23 deg hybrid. 5 - sw 52 60 wedges, putter

I tend to use the 5 iron and hybrid more than the 3 / 5 woods as im more consistant with them (depends on the lie). and often hit the 5 iron further than the hybrid.

But often im in a position where ifeel i need to hit a 3 wood, but I know im going to top it, so take the hybrid and leave myself 30 yards short.

Im thinking about ditching the 3 wood and bringing in a 4 iron.

Of course, I could always learn how to hit the blooming things properly

Fragger

I'm getting to grips with my bag and my clubs slowly. I will mainly play my club and as a result my bag represents the clubs I need to play it most effectively. When I play away I'll just have to adapt :D

As my swing matures I hope to be able to strike my 3 Wood more accurately so it becomes my go to club. There are a variety of holes where there is a premium of accuracy over distance. As a result Driver, 3 Wood, Hybrid are my tee options, with the Hybrid also serving as the 2nd shot on our long and short par 5s.

The 3 iron is mainly for our first hole a 216 yard par 3, but I also use it on a couple of other par 3's when the wind is up and in your face. Other irons for general approach play and par 3 tees.

As for the wedges you just don't need 60 degrees of loft at our place, something I have come to recognise following advice on here. That said the 7 degree gap between my PW & GW still grates.

When I become a better player I might replace my 3 wood, Hybrid and 3 iron with 4 wood & Hybrid and get a wedge set up of 50, 54, 58. At the moment though an extra wedge would be wasted on me! :D
