Is anyone a member of a club in the Bromley area?. Maybe looking to join a club soon and would like one where it's easy to get a game with other members and has friendly atmosphere.
I'm a London cabbie, so play mostly through the week, but would like to play some comps. Any feedback appreciated , even ones to stay away from.

Hi Mick

Although i do not live there now i spent alot of time in that area for various reasons, so here are a few thoughts.

What standard is your golf? If you are a beginner or just starting out there are some great Munis like High Elms, Beckenham Place Park or even the 9 hole Bromley golf club at Magpie Hall lane near Bromley Common.

OR....

More substantional memberships at Sundridge Park (two courses)Langley Park (they used to do OPEN qualifying here!)or Chislehurst are all good courses.

I cant comment on the clubs but these courses are all excellent

Been playing for a good few years, i play regulary at high elms & Darenth valley. I feel that i need to step it up a bit, i play off 18 & knock round most thursday mornings with my dad. Was wondering what private clubs are like.

Mick, your in a good location for some courses doing some nice deals at the moment.

West kent (Nr high elms) is around £1200 for the year and is a members only course, a couple of guys are members from on here, although i dont know much about their roll ups or comps. i do think there is a small joining fee here of around £500.

Parkwood at tatsfield(other side of biggin hill) is nice, its the one im going to join i think. its about £1150 for a year with no joining fee, greenfee's at weekends only after 11am but a nice set of staff there with good practice facilities. It also has a deal in place with cherry lodge and bletchingley i think so thats a bonus.

one last one i seriously considered is north downs, a private members course, only 200 members with no weekend green fee's, please of roll ups on nearly every day. I havent played the course but have heard mixed reviews. There was no joining fee here, full 7 day was £999, but there is a deal on at the moment where you pay £295 for 3 months, if you then wanted to stay, you payed the difference of £700 but got a full 12 months membership, effectively 15months membership for a grand.

Parkwood and Northdowns were both very willing to have a free trial round with captain/vice captain.

Hi Mick,

I'm a member at West Kent and can say the most of the members are really friendly and there are swindles/roll ups running most days. I'm afraid due to working in London I only play in the evenings during the week if i'm lucky and at weekends, so do not know too much about weekday goings on, but if you fancy a round up there to see what the course is like let me know and we'll see if we can sort out a game.

Dave

If you don't want to pay a joining fee then Addington Palace might be worth consideration. Currently they are looking for 15 new members.

Hi Mick,

I'm at Westerham, which isn't too far from Bromley (I'm in Orpington) and it's a great course. Happy to get you a round there if you want?

Sundridge is probably the best in the immediate area, but the joining fee is what stops me joining there.

Beckenham Place Park (think might be different name now) is good for what it is.

Avoid Cherry Lodge (Biggin Hill) as it's bad in the winter. Really bad.

Broke Hill near Orpington is okay, but not as good as Westerham.

I'm at Langley Park, but of the courses mentioned that I have played (Westerham, Sundridge Park, Broke Hill, West kent) I would not put you off any of those.

What I would say is consider your journey to the course. As you know, the traffic where we live is pretty crap most of the time and those extra minutes getting to a course in the traffic can really get you down. Also, consider what you want from the course/club and what is important to you. Practise facilities, hard/testing course, easier course for higher handicaps, social scene etc etc.

The main reason I chose Langley was the toughness of the course, location to my home, easy to walk (would not fancy Westerham after a hard day at work for example) and good social scene. If however I was after good practise facilities, then I would not be at Langley!

ps. I have heard Chislehurst are desperate for members, but have never played it and joining a struggling course may not be the best idea?

Although the condition of the course and particularly the greens is usually of the highest standard, I'm not a fan. The clubhouse is very imposing with a good history but is, unfortunately, a money sink.

The course is very "compact" with many crossover points where you need to be aware of being in the firing line and has a par of 66 (8 par 3's and 2 par 5's both less than 500 yds) and yardage off the whites of 5119 yds.

Just my opinion of course. :)

I've played chislehurst & as you say very well kept, but I couldn't be a member of a club with that many par 3s. Sundridge has always been my 1st choice. Ive not played west Kent, so need to try that, Langley played a bit as I know a member, it's a bit flat for me.
Thanks for the advice guys, now to speak to the bank manager (the wife)

TBH mate, there's nowhere in the area that comes anywhere close to Sundridge Park, and I'm not saying that just because I'm lucky enough to be a member.

Because of that, there is the problem of the joining fee :( :(

Unfortunately, the man's right! :(

Mmmmmmmmm sounds like one of those very old members on a reduced rate looking to bolster membership in order to keep super senior rates to a minimum!!

Oh hi Roger!

:D :D

Unfortunately us old geezers don't get reduced fees now, and I think that membership may be near enough full at the moment anyway.

:)

Mick,

Have to agree that Sundridge is a great course/s and as most people have said, if money was not a problem you would join there! But as I said before let me know when you are around for a game at West Kent, just so you get to see the course before joining anywhere!
