Hi I am new to the site.
I was just wondering how much your meant to rotate (i.e open) the clubface on the first half of the backswing? I am getting confused about keeping the clubface square to the target or rotating more, which feels more natural but I also feel I have less chance of squaring up at impact.

Most of my pros have tried to get me having the clubface pointing straight "up" (toe to sky) at the 9 o'clock position.
Only one suggested I could actually leave the face a little closed at this point....not a bad idea if you are struggling to get it back to square.

You don't really want to be rolling the clubface open at all, because then you're going to have to make the extra effort to close it again (which is inconsistant). In theory it should remain pretty square to the line that you are taking the club up at... generally just slightly closed at the half way back position, a bit like this...

...that way all you have to do is swing back down to the ball.
