• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Club Types: Private, Members or Council! WHats better and why?

Mr Monster, I'm a resident of ye olde Bury and want to 'shop around' this year and over winter with the purpose of becoming a member somewhere. Where is it you play?

Hi Odvan, i play at Greenmount. Its only a 9 hole but its tight, and like i've said the members are a good bunch. They have a regular rollup every Wednesday and comps at the weekend,so plenty going on.
Where do you play at the moment?

Of course, sorry, I recall now from another thread. Lived round here for 3 years now and never knew Greenmount had a course until I came on here!

As I said, I don't, I'm just going to hop around as many as I can in the area over the next few months and go from there. Very much a solo golfer at the mo so finding a place with equally good people is quite important.

I was just on Bury's website wondering whether to play there on Friday or whether to play Stand (played there before and liked it). Played Harwood last month but now you mention your place may drive over there.

I've recently joined a club, and went for a members club, over a family-owned club, and a privately-owned club.

Reviews of the familiy-owned club were that they could pick & choose who they would let join. If the club pro (the son of the family) didn't like you, then you wouldn't get much of a welcome. Full of ten-bob-millionaires too, who I can't do with.

The privately-owned club was OK, but I had the feeling that once the proprietor got your money, that was it, you're no concern of his anymore.

The members club I joined is brilliant. It's great how even though you are new, everyone says hello, shakes your hand, and has a bit of a chat. It's only open to non-members on weekend afternoons, so tee-times are easy to come by. I'd definitely recommend a members club, it feels much more "clubby", and that you are part of something.

Bury is much improved and is now a really nice club. When i played there last, they had an "owd farts" club that got there around 7 am. Don't let the name put you off, they were a good bunch and had no problems with me joining in for the morning.
If you want to play mine drop us a pm, can't play Friday but with a bit of notice i can usually sort something out.

Good luck with the Kent and Surrey - having been a member at Poult Wood for 27 years I played it (Edenbridge) under all it's guises until a few years ago - it had good times and bad, but has never really gone forward. I understand the owners have currently benefitted from lucrative spoil dumping contracts; nominally to be used to further develop the course, I really hope this progresses...

Where are you a member now, Duncan?

Top man, appreciate the offer. Very kind of you. One night after work perhaps, for 9 anyway?

I think on your advice I will look to play Bury on Friday and check out the Clubhouse after although the hot weather might put me off what some say is a hilly course. Stand may yet win for the round but not sure of the social element there, the Clubhouse isn't great from memory.
