Hi

I currently use Titleist DCI 962's with Taylormade Driver and 5 wood. The longest iron I carry is a 3 but am looking to replace this as I dont hit it well enough to say hit the green on a 180-200 yd par3, and 5 wood is too strong.

I think I need a rescue club (like a 7 wood) but not sure what type and loft I need to do the job. What have you bought that does the job for you? I play off 12.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)

I am not too confident yet with the 3 Iron off the tee either, though determined to tame the beast lol, so it will stay in my bag. I use a 21 deg rescue for those longer par 3's and thinking about it that's the only time it gets used, I prefer to hit my long irons from the semi-rough! :D

Obvious answer would seem to be a 3 or 4 hybrid.

Although I believe that if you can hit a 4I you can hit a 3I, even if you do need to practise it more.

Personally, I have enough problems with the idea of hitting down on the irons, but less so on the woods. Let alone having another type of club in there that looks like a small wood, but you hit like an iron :D

I've only ever hit a couple of hybrid shots, so I'm not the best reviewer of them, but I'm currently playing with 962s, and find the 3I every bit as hard to hit as the rest of the damn things, ( but no harder ;) ). As far as I'm concerned the secret is to not try to hit it too hard - but then, I only get mine to go about 170-180m max.

Personally I go 3w, 5w, 24degree hybrid 5-pw etc etc as I find this gives me the yardages I need. Sounds like you need a 21 degree hybrid or a 21 degree 7 wood. Callaway do a Big Bertha 7 wood - 2004 model - that should be reasonably cheap and is a great club. The 7 wood should go a bit higher and a bit longer than the hybrid.

I play 1/3/5 woods and a 3 iron/hybrid.

I also have a 9 wood. :)

For me, I prefer the hybrid to a proper iron, although I also use a real 3 iron from time to time.

I'd say try a hybrid of around 20-21 degrees and maybe a 7 wood. Off the tee, I'd go with the 7 wood, off the fairway, the hybrid. Each to their own.

f.w.i.w. the old "gentleman's persuader" 7 wood is a glorious club to own if you like fairway woods. A 9 is pretty great too, but expect some balls to come down with snow on!!!

You dont want the 2 iron in my garage then ???

Oh no, if I had room in my bag ( which at the moment I do ;) ) I'd carry it if only for the poseur's take out, waggle it, before umming and putting it back to bring out the 5w. Making sure my oppo sees the steely blade and the glint of madness in my eyes, of course.

That'd get 'em shaking in their footjoys :D .

You crack me up mate :D

Thanks for all your replies.

A 7 wood or even 9 wood sounds ideal distance-wise because i can see how that slots in between a 3I and the 5W that I carry. The trouble is, and apologies if I offend anyone, they're not that cool to carry are they?

I hit a 3 iron less than perfect a lot of the time, and my 5W is a burner 18degree which is exceptional. Its too long for those long approaches or tough par 3's and my 3I wont get me home.

I think I need a 7W or 9W in disguise!

Incidentally my 5W is 18deg and I guess my 3I is about 22 deg. what loft should I be looking at? I presume the length of the shaft ultimately decides distance?

Any Golfer worth his weight knows that what's cool doesn't matter if it gets the ball in or close to the hole.

If you're directly replacing your 3iron then a 21 degree hybrid will do it and yes it will look cool - Tart!! :D

Wish i could hit fairway woods (3,5,7 any number you choose).
I've got more 3 woods in my cupboard than AG has in there warehouse!!!!
I don't know what it is but i just can't hit one off the deck, 2 iron no probs......3 wood your having a laugh!
Even tried a few hybrids and i couldn't hit those off the deck if my life depended on it! :D
