Club Staff having free golf?

Costs the club no money, pay his levies and all good. Club sounds stingy and desperate. I’d have second hand embarrassment if I were a member and he told me that

When someone joins the club they become a part owner of the club , they pay a joining fee to be a part owner of the club

We have limited numbers of members at the club

It’s nothing to do with being “stingy” - it’s the constitution of the club , if you want to be a member and part own the club then you pay your fees

that’s the same with one of the bar staff who is a member and one of the pro shop helpers who is a member

Allow them the absolute privilege of being a member without part ownership. I am a member of the club where the membership in theory owns the club but none on the greenstaff or staff would be asked to pay any joining fee or subscription fees. It’s an easy adjustment to make at an AGM

Wow can’t actually believe what I’ve read on this topic. Imagine working at/for a GC and not being able to use the facilities as part of the benefits of working there. If you were a golfer you would just go to a club where they offered use of facilities of which there are many. Some people are just backwards
Whilst I agree, I would be very surprised if the gk staff at the likes of Muirfield, Royal St. George’s etc get free golf.

All our staff are given full playing rights. But unless they also join and pay the appropriate (age related) annual fee, they don't have voting rights.

So how many of the 20 plus staff gets it all free

That’s 20 x £1.5k joining fee

And 20 x £1.5k every year

When a club has limited numbers of members where do you stop

there is no need to give staff full memberships

As @Hobbit previously mentioned. You lower the annual salary by the equivalent of the price of a membership each year and you have known loss of income but have an employe that’s getting a bit more for their worth! As for joining fee if you can’t forgo that for the members of staff there’s a bigger issue with the club than just its finances.

It’s easy to make it work on a balance sheet and easy to get through an AGM you just don’t like and believe your clubs is the only right way to do as it’s what affects you instead of accepting differing views and people not liking how your clubs run.

Or you keep the salary they have now and then the employee makes the choice on how they spend that money - if they want to use it to join the club they can

And joining fees are part of our budgets etc

And we are talking about my club and the way it works because someone said it was “embarrassing” -

We have no joining fee.
The General Manager and the Deputy have the annual subs built in to their salary. When they play, they will see and experience the course as other members do.
The caterer pays full whack I believe.
Two greenkeepers play but they have membership of courses nearer to where they live.
The two pros play
Of about 20 full & part time staff, no one else is interested

And that’s about it for us

The Pro plays when he wants to play in the challenges and matches etc

the Head GK has a few holes when he wants and plays away days etc - he is an igolf member

A GK is a full member as is one of bar staff , one joined when he was 17

The rest don’t play

When we had a GM he played the course but didn’t enter comps etc

When we had a secretary he was a member

Joining fees are easily circumvented for staff whether it’s in the budgets or not really isn’t that hard to work out as part of a salary package and easily reported through finance and accountants for this purpose. Especially as you said it buys them a stake in the club, simply don’t let them buy that that stake and report it through accounts and limit their voting rights.

And someone is completely entitled to say it’s embarrassing and I agree with them it’s an opinion and you don’t have to agree with it but to die on a hill saying your clubs got it the right way without acknowledging others are entitled to think it’s embarrassing and not want to be part of a club that doesn’t such a thing is odd!

As long as you’re happy with how your club treats its staff that’s fine many of us think it’s embarrassing and are equally entitled to that opinion. !! Anyway discussing this over and again with you gets us nowhere 👍

As said a number of times - other clubs can work how they want 🤷‍♂️ and nowhere did I say our club got it “right” - they work how they want to work for the benefit of the members - there is no “right or wrong”

And our staff appear very happy to how they are “treated” and blanket statements of “many of us think” - doesn’t really wash

🤣

No one’s trying to bathe in it. But point out many of us find it embarrassing isn’t trying to make it wash it’s pointing a statement of fact many people have said they think it’s poor. Not trying to prove or wash anything what a weird response!! On that note enjoy your day sir 👌😘
