On a lot of the threads about shafts, lofts etc, some people get rather technical about the exact specs of their clubs and what swing weight, lofts their clubs are. Although I am an engineer by trade and therefore quite technically minded, I really don't know the loft and weight of my clubs or even what shafts they are - apart form being 1/2" longer, regular and stepped (not sure if soft or hard - was a while ago since I was fitted). Do other people know their exact technical specs for their clubs, or do most not care as long as the y work - most of the time?

I think I only know because I was fitted

I've always known my lofts as I like to pick my wedges based on the gaps between the irons

Before I was fitted I knew I was regular shaft. Wouldn't be able to tell the shaft without double checking

But since being fit I can tell you exactly what shaft (because I picked it) what degree upright

That said I was fit for My driver and don't have a clue what shaft that is but I do know the setting on it

Whilst being generally interested in such stuff, other than the native lofts and the shaft model, I couldn't tell you off the top of my head the exact specs of my clubs except perhaps my wedges, as I built them myself.

Everything else is as per manufacturer standard...nothing has been bent, tweaked or altered....except for the fitting of thicker heavier grips...which technically changes the swingweight, but in reality has no effect on how the club feels to swing, other than the effect of the increased grip thickness.

I don't, and have never known, the specs of any clubs I have owned. I know if the shaft is stiff, regular, seniors etc but all of the real nitty gritty detail, not a clue.

I remember when I bought my Ping Irons and they were yellow dot. I posted on here about whether I should get the loft checked to see if they were still accurate. Someone asked if I was hitting them okay. 'If yes, leave them alone, don't over complicate things'. Solid advice. I get why people might want to know all of the details but for most of us, they don't really matter.

I know the lofts - not by heart but I know the 7 iron and PW lofts as these seem to be the reference points between iron sets. Swing-weight is a bridge too far, I've no idea about that. The shafts in my irons are quite light but still regular flex, that's as much as I know. When I did the fitting I was standard length and lie too, so nothing complicated to remember there. I don't even know what 'stepped' means, which you've referred to.

With driver, the shaft is non-standard (it's a Hzrdus something or other), but I cannot recall what benefits it brought over the standard Ping shaft or what was different about it - just trusted the fitter on that one.

With wedges I know a little about bounce but absolutely no understanding of different grinds. I got CBX Zipcores anyway which are cavity-backed forgiving things with decent bounce, so I don't believe they even do them in different grinds.

My interest as above is because I was fitted, but although a bit nerdy, I think it is useful to know which shaft weight, club length, grip size, loft and lie works best.

I am only 5'9" and play half an inch longer because of my swing I am told, so as that changes, so may club length I guess and maybe with that lie angle - who knows...

In the main yes, I tend to look up the specs before buying, been for a few fittings and done some club building so have a bit of the kit anyway such as a swing weight gauge/scale.

I know the lofts of my irons as otherwise I'd be guessing the likely yardages.

If there's a shaft band on the shaft that that gives the flex then I'll know the flex.

And I usually measure the length of the 5 iron, but this is more for curiosity than to actually help me in swinging the club.

As far as I'm aware shaft stiffness varies quite a bit between manufacturers so ones clubs regular may be the same as anothers stiff and a third makers flexible..
Haven't a clue what my specs are other than they are longer than standard.
