Club Security

Sorry Stuart. Very insensitive of me.

I'll put that right. Good news for joining in to raise money for the youngster. It makes me realise how lucky I am to have 2 healthy (fingers crossed forever) kids. I sometimes wish that we weren't so tied up in our own lives to help some of these kids sometimes.

No worries HH, it was a great day all in all and over acheived in what we set out to do which was raising a few ££.

As soon as i was asked to take part in playing and raising funds for the little boy, i never hesitated and would certainly do it again.

The Pro also borrowed the lad whose clubs got nicked a full set of sticks for the round free of charge which was a nice touch.

CCTV isnt always the answer, I had my car broken into in a Tesco car park ( Prestwich manchester) at 4pm one weekday, was in the store no longer than 5 mins, came back, driver door lock smashed, sterring column, broken bonnet up, trying to turn of the immobiliser, they only stopped because an elderly gent apprehended them and then they scarpered, went in-store to see the security and asked if i could see the cctv footage so that the Police could view it when they arrived and also for insurance. The guard said they dont have it turned on unless there is an incident!
ALso beware the AA they would recover the car and tow me to a garage despite having what I thought was full cover with them - vandalism/theft not included. Luckily Tesco have an arrangement with the RAC, who took me to my garage.
CCTV not always the answer

i would defitenly have at least some cctv cameras and maybe a watchman who loves golf just wondering around keeping on eye on things this would improve security and open up some jobs for the people most affected by the credit crunch

Poor guy he was playing for a good cause aswell

What stops thieves more than cameras are simple things like active vigilance coupled with tight social membership and sensible actions by golfers to protect their kit.

When I visit a club and am welcomed by inquiring friendly people, willing to say hello or indulge in chit chat with a stranger, that to me is a vigilant membership, and inquisitive membership. When I see people making sure their cars are locked and kit stowed away, and advise others about locking cars and covering kit, this tells me they are security concious. It also tells me that because it is a social club of friendly people, they will all look out for one another, and it works. (not foolproof but better than cctv)

I have visited many clubs over the years and come across many where no one welcomes you, talks to you or talk to their own members much, no one reminds you to lock your car, no one cares that your clubs are in the car and that they have had a series of recent thefts from cars, where no one dares to look at you let alone watch you......these clubs in my view are a blessing to thieves.
I have walked into locker rooms at some clubs and never been asked anything or even spoken to, then found myself in the clubhouse bar only exchanging with the bar staff to get a drink, no one else interested in who I am, now this is fair enough, but if I were a thief it would be heavenly.

My clubs locker room can only be opened by swipe card and so visitors either have to be assigned them (as they were for the GM meet) or the member has to take responsibility for letting them in and out. I've already mentioned the security gates which need a token or the password to allow cars out. The clubhouse actually needs swipe card access for all areas before 7.30am and after 6.00pm so it does make it as hard as possible for strangers to get access inside. It also makes a snatch and grab in the car park difficult as a quick getaway is unlikely. The gates are between the first tee and practice ground and so there are usually people around and I think the majority would be quick to question anything out of place. I know a lot of our members are quite blunt with strangers or members they don't recognise especially if they are loitering around the car park (waiting for partners etc). You will never stop all theft but I'm reassured my club has done as much as possible to reduce the risk
