A question about Club Memberships.

Obviously I know not all clubs will have the same rules, but I would imagine that for the majority of clubs it would be the same.

If I pay for a 7 day full membership, does this mean that I have full use of the course for 7 days, time and weather permitting.

Or do I have to pay green fees every time I wish to play as well?

For example do I

1. Pay £1500 Membership and they say the course and facilities are yours, use them you wish.

2. Pay £1500 Membership and then have to pay £20 fees everytime I wish to play, but with some membership benefits

Im not sure, ive never joined a Golf Club before and I wish to do so.

I would say the vast majority are in the example 1.
Be aware that some courses charge a joining fee for the first year on top of the subscription.
Also some charge a fee to enter a competition some don't. The normal entry fee where I play is £4

Yep if you pay for full membership then you can play 36 holes+ per day 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Theres one or two of the seniors at our place who tend to play 6 or 7 days a week most weeks!

Most member clubs are example 1 but you should watch the club diary for course closures for competitions, ladies days, vets comps & societies which could mean that you can't play at certain times

Good luck with your golf

...and of your option 1 some clubs (including my own) do not require me to book a tee time - I just roll up and if tee is empty off I can go. Competition and society tee bookings aside - I could play all day every day - as many or as few holes as I wish.

Yep, doesn't matter if the pro shop is closed, or even if the clubhouse is closed (it happened once for a few days while new windows were fitted). Walk up and if the tee is free, rock on.

If you pay for full membership then you should have access to the course all week and at weekends. Some courses will operate a booking system and so you'd be required to book a slot every time. Others don't and so if the tee isn't booked for a competition you can go out as you please.

Some clubs offer flexible memberships, although these do tend to be much cheaper than the £1500 (the cost of the full membership quoted) and then you simply pay a green fee, normally reduced compared to visitors every time you play and may still need to book a tee time. I know clubs that do both (I'm a member of the first option but a friend plays at Kingswood in Surrey under option two as he doesn't play every week/weekend and it suits his needs)

If you're new to golf clubs, you might see some membership terminology that you're not familiar with. Here's a quick glossary that is not exhaustive but might be helpful:

  • full membership - play as often as you want with no charge other than your annual fee, also known as 7 day membership
  • 5 day membership - your annual fee allows you to play for free during the week but you'll need to pay a green fee if you play at the weekend
  • county membership - available to players who live more than a certain distance from the club, it's cheaper on the assumption that you won't play as often (typically restriction is you must live 50 miles away but this varies)
  • flexible membership (v1) - you pay a reduced annual fee but then pay a discounted green fee each time you play, can be cheaper if you can't play very often or like to play at other courses - also known budget or green fee membership
  • flexible membership (v2) – your annual fee is converted into points that you then spend on golf throughout the year, playing at a peak time will cost you more points than at a quiet time, there will probably be the option to buy more points during the year

Whichever membership option you choose, there will be competition entry fees to pay on top – at my club it’s £3 per comp and I think this is pretty typical

Hope this helps.

I think you also need to be aware that clubs have things like open competitions, ladies days and team matches. On these days you will still have access but it will be restricted, so a little planing ahead will be needed.
