Hi have been thinking about club distances as the lessons i have been getting seem to be giving me a few more yards with the irons below is the distance i hit the club in yards the wedges seem to be more like 20 yards increments and the irons around 12. The question I have is should there be a consistant gap in my case 12 yards between clubs.

80 60 degree
100 56 degree
120 52 degree
135 PW
147 9
159 8
171 7
183 6
195 5
207 6 Hybrid
219 4 Hybrid
240 3 Wood
275 Driver

Mike those are pro distances.....good work fella!!!!

I hit PW 100 yds and i'm the long hitter in my crowd!!!

Mind you i can throw a PW about 50 yds.....bet you can't beat that??? :p

A lot of us see bigger yardage gaps with the very lofted clubs despite lofts changing 4 or 5 degress through the set - someone good on physics can explain that. If it's an issue you'll need to find an extra wedge if you're not at 14 clubs already.

You're getting some serious yardage, seen this before particularly with young players with quick swings who really load the shaft creating tons of lag in the clubhead and release it ultra quick just before impact (think Sergio) - takes really fast hand action and will give you big yardage but if your timing is fractionally off you'll be all over the place. I don't swing like that, have a more even tempo with much less lag so can't hit it anything like as far with my irons anyway. 155 for a 7 iron, 115 for a PW for me.

I don't think a consistent gap is that important so long as you know how far you hit your irons.

Impressive figures.

When and how did you measure them? As it might be worth looking to see how far you actually carry each club as that will give you a better idea for playing on different courses and in difference conditions.

Hi,
would get very little roll on any iron down to the 6 they would generally be hop and stop 7&8 9 and PW stop dead and a little back spin on the 3 short wedges distance come from a big field and a yardage wheel on a calm day did the 9, 7 and 5 a 56 and 60 degree wedge and worked everything off that the driver would be from general play a bad drive would be 250 to 260 up to 300 on a screamer so 275 is around average the distance helps on the par 4's 400 yards is usually driver 9/ PW or 52degree if only i could chip like a 18 handicapper i would be very low but its something to work on.

Those are big yardages as has been said.
I'm not short amongst those I play with, and have a slow tempo to my swing, but I'm more like 115/120 PW, 145-155 7iron.

can i ask (but to be silly this a thing i am wondering about distances) how did you come to get them stats
mike or any body else
(sorry to jump on the back of this)

I go to the practice ground and hit 5 with each club and then use a combination of pacing and a function on my GPS to measure the distance from where I was hitting to the average of those 5 balls.

Physical measurement with a surveyors distance wheel (borrowed from work).
Warm up a bit then hit 15 balls per club on your normal tempo, not thrashing them, take the average of the grouping, discarding any mishits, shanks etc. Ground is better soft so the balls stop - it's the carry distance you want not the rolled out distance.
Weather needs to be still and not too hot or cold as that will affect distance.
Once you've got your averages distances per club and course distance info via strokesaver or GPS you can manage your game way better.....in theory :o

Thats some big clubbing there Mike , if I tried to hit those yardages my swing would be way to fast and out of control

Matt , a lot people probably use a gps like skycaddie to check their yardages

wow, these are big compared to mine which is 150 with a 5 iron but can do 250 with a driver.

I did mine via SC5. Like birdieman I hit a series of shots (10 per club in my case) and took the average distance. Mine was into a lisght (10mph or so breeze) so I also hit the same back into the breeze to give me a ball park figure to use in the wind

I admire the distances but I wouldn't get overly excited. Its all about your own swing and how far YOU hit with a nice smooth and controlled swing. I'd love to see Mike's swing on video though. He must get some serious clubhead speed

Problem I've got is that the only place I can do this is on the course. No grass practice ground anywhere local and the ranges don't allow you to venture out into the field - and anyway there are a million other balls out there so I'd never find mine.
On course, I wouldn't be able to hit more than about 5 balls and I'd be halfway through measuring them when the next group appears on the tee.

This is the swing here, it is a bit funny Alec to hit the driver 150 and the driver 250 you must really go after the driver and hold back on the irons. I'd did the measuring using a yardage wheel its important to have flat ground and try and do it on a very calm day.

Checked my distances today with a GPS and its a bit of a suprise to see that i didn't hit the ball as far as i thought i could.

Mike I thought the opposite - when I saw your iron distances my first thought was why isn't he hitting driver 290/300 average. :D

I'd hit it over 300 a couple of times a round but will have the odd 250 yarder so 275 would be average longest carry i'v hit was 340 no wind no run.
