There are 1 or 2 reasonable clubs neaeby!

What's the big deal about enticing better players btw. I know of a pretty successful place that only has (had) a couple of Cat 1 players - that weren't Juniors - out of several hundred members. Courses were pretty good - at least in Summer - too.
 
Just found out I am in the first group out in our Club Champs...

Playing with a 6 and 10 handicapper, both of whom are capable of shooting level par rounds as their handicaps are a bit high for their ability. Both hit the ball miles and are probably the two best regular playing members at the club going into the competition.

Talk about intimidating or what!

I am sorry, but your comments are bloody ridiculous. I am a Cat 1 golfer but am offended for the people on this thread that arent about what you are saying.

Yes the club championship should and will always be gross, but why not have nett competititions as well?

with regards to the final score being +6 for two rounds, ever considered the fact that most national amateur events are won with a score over par? yes the courses are tough, but not THE HARDEST IN THE WORLD as you would put it.

Also, i notice you are yet to discolse your handicap in this thread? i am guessing you are probably cat1 but probably bitter that some 'chopper' of 6 finished about you in the club champs.

I think in terms of laughing stock this comment is the laughing stock of the thread!

+6 combined score for 36 holes is still damn good scoring and worthy of a win, if you have to be well under this number then perhaps the course isn't challenging enough! Theres more to club golf than Cat 1.

You are talking complete twaddle!

Of course it's possible for a 10-capper to shoot a better NETT score than a Scratch player - even over 2 rounds. I've certainly done it few times - and that's at a 'stable' handicap. Any improver (particularly Juniors) should find it relatively easy. There is no 'magic' barrier at Cat 1, though further improvement does get more difficult! Wouldn;t make me Club Champ imo though! GROSS is much less likely (though I did that once too), but plenty of 6-cappers (Cat 2) could score better than high Cat 1s (eg at 5) so certainly not impossible.

And there are certainly plenty of clubs where 3 or 4 over gross is actually a good score - in Club Champ set-up! The Addington (maybe changed now) and Carnoustie spring to mind where SSS is Par +3! So a Scratch player playing to handicap would be +6 for 36 holes.

Another case of 'All generalisers are Fools!' I'm afraid! :)

were did I state that a nett comp should not be run along side the best gross comp? And it could be just me but if a 10 h/c was shooting a better gross score over 36 holes than a handful of +2 and scratch golfers and a dozen sub 5 h/c players I think questions would be asked,don't you?. My comment about the club champion being 6 or more over comes from never being a member of a club that this has been the case,but I have always been a member of a club that has plenty of scratch or better players,if the club others are members of only has cat2 or above then I suppose an above par score is ok,but then my quote about not attracting better players to the club stands,I know of 2 +3 golfers who get free membership to away clubs so as to be eligible to play in their inter county teams because the clubs find it helps in promoting the standard of player they have.and I was cat1a very long time ago now I am double figures but still enjoy playing even in the best nett comp.

Our net prize was one with a net 63 and net 67 (-7 and -3 net respectively) by an improving 19 handicapper. Second was net 63, net 72 by an 18. The best scores over two rounds by two golfers who play regularly in all the comps and so in no way can be accused of hiding or protecting their handicap. No way would any low handicapper compete with that.

No doubt in 6inchcup's world questions would be asked. For the record our gross prize was one by a two handicapper

homer,I agree it would be very unlikely that a scratch player could win in a nett comp against a 10h/c player having a good round,BUT I stated gross figures,now would you not ask the question if a 10h/c was winning a gross comp ?

No. Best two scores over the day or weekend depending on the format. Surely that is the beauty of a gross event. Level playing field for all. As long as the golfer played regularly in club comps so there could be no argument about the validity of the handicap, whoever plays best twice wins.
 
We had our Scratch Cup yesterday in tough conditions.
I played 3 over my handicap for the day (78,76), and in the conditions was quite content with my score.
I came 3rd, 7 behind 2nd place and he was a mere 8 behind the winner. You could say I was the best of the rest.
Scores of 69,70 for the winner were very impressive on the day.

We have a two round nett (divisional & Overall) championship held on the same day, but results aren't up for that yet.
 
It was our club champs at the weekend.
Tough conditions, not many under handicap. I shot net 74, net 69 (SSS70, CSS71 both days) to get 3rd in the handicap comp.
The gross and net comps were both won by the same guy, a 1 handicapper (now scratch after this weekend) who shot gross 76, 66. Magnificent golf on day 2, great comeback as he was off the pace after round 1 but was the only guy to go really low on day 2. Same guy won last year, he had stiff competition this year but what a round to take the spoils.

Max handicap was 18, so apparently a low capper can win against a field of many high cappers.

I think you need to get your words right! Statement in first quote is definitely wrong imo!

Btw. Those +3 guys getting free membership (and the Clubs) need to be careful how the membership offers are phrased. They could be infringing the Rules of Amateur Status.

I'm off 28 but partnered a 6 handicapper in a comp last week.
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
"We" won with the help of the one hole I contributed!

Our 36 hole scratch Club Champs yesterday. Par 72, 6921yds, SSS 74. CSS was 75 in the morning and 76 in the afternoon. It was won by a +1 h'capper who shot 72, 77 - best gross in the morning and best gross in the afternoon. A brutal crosswind on a tight links course. Seven players broke 80 in the morning, and five in the afternoon out of 25 entrants - 15 players were Cat 1. My first outing in it for a number of years and.... well at least I survived, although that's 0.2 added to the h'cap - 5.7 now.

I managed to win mine on Saturday, thought I'd be delighted but now feeling empty and deflated after building up to it for so long with nothing left to look forward to until next year
