Club Championships

Oh dear - 112 and 103. Bad, bad weekend on the course. Impossible to judge whether the gameplan was to blame or not. When you mishit as many as I did I don't think any plan would help. That'll be 0.2 back. Heading the wrong way back to cat 4
 
How can you play in the club championship if your not a cat1 player,ours was won by a +2 player who shot acombined score after 36holes of 11 under and had to play a scratch player in a play off to win,what your playing for is the best nett score this is not the club champions comp but a comp run along side the main event.

Because it's the "club" championship which means the whole club. Many clubs don't have that many Cat 1 players and even fewer have +h'caps. If only Cat one players could enter it would be a non-event with only about 6 people in it. Why shouldn't someone like me off 7 be allowed to enter when the best player at the club is off 2?

We actually run two competitions side by side, the club championship which is scratch and the Derek Lane h'cap club championship which is Nett. Can't see a lot wrong with that myself. If you're gonna get all Cat 1 snobby about it then most clubs wouldn't have a club championship at all.

I didn't mean to be snobbish and apologise if taken in the wrong way,all club champions at clubs I know have been the lowest gross score over 36/72 holes,this by its very nature is normally a scratch or better player,everyone else is playing for the best nett score this is indeed open to all members and rightly so,I have never known a cat 2 or above to be a club champion unless there are no cat1 players at the club but it must be a poor club that can't attract cat1golfers to play there.

A lot of clubs don't have that many Cat 1 players
 
everyone should be allowed to 'try' and qualify for the club championship matchplay stages, top scratch 16 usually qualify, IMO you shouldn't be barred from entering because your not the 'right handicap':(
It's the CLUB championship and if you are a member of the CLUB you should have the right to enter.


I won the Nett championship at Gleneagles a few years back but as I was after the scratch one it paled a bit, however I can see it being a great goal to aim for if you are out of the main one.
 
At my club its 36 hole qualifying split over 2 weekend ( 1 saturday then 1 the next ) then top 16 low handicappers play match play all week then 36 hole final on the sunday, the handicap trophy is the same but 18 hole final on the sunday.

So the way you guys have it over 2 rounds is interesting.

it does not matter how many there are they would still be expected to shoot a lower combined gross score than say a Catt 2 or above they would still be cc even if they were the only cat 1 member,it would not be much of a club champion if the combined gross score was +6 or greater in fact it would make the club a laughing stock.

I wasn't saying they cat1s wouldn't win, just pointing out that there must be a lot of "poor" clubs out there
 
I'm only at a small club that has a pool of about 40 for competions. Only 26 entered our club championship and it was won by a seven handicap who was, I think, 17 over for 36 holes. I was about a thousand over and finished low down the rankings. :)
 
we dont have any cat 1's (lowest h/c is 6, something I believe) and only about 80 members the majority of which are seniors so we have a gross and nett comp running simultaneously. 3rd in our nett was a bloke who plays with one arm, top bloke and hits a mean ball. Puts my swing to shame and I am able bodied!

The single figure guys always win the gross as they should but the nett can be anyones and makes it a fun day for all the members

They might be expected to score lower. Man Utd would be expected to beat Huddersfield if they met in the FA cup, but they still make them play the game.

Unless a comp has hundreds of entries, letting cat3 or even 4's in the CC is hurting no-one.

As for a club being poor if they only have a handful of cat1's or being a laughing stock if the combined gross is worse than +6, I am lost for words.

i never said it was not ok for everyone to enter just that it would be impossible under normal play for say a 10 h/c player to shoot a better nett score over 36 holes than a scratch or better player,it could just be me but having a club champion who was 6or worse over par does not make the club look good,it is either the hardest track in the world that even single figure golfers struggle or it is a poor club that hasn't got any single figure or better players,but at the end of the day a club champ is a club champ just depends on the club.

By the way, our club champs has just been won by our lowest handicap with a combined total of +4, lets all laugh at RAGC ;)

I meant if your a high h/c in reality your playing in the best nett comp,NOT the club champions comp,as for your club champ being 4 over well good for him,is the course super tough or can it not entice better players as there are better courses clubs near by ?

We're in Berkshire, the competition is quite good
 
I doubt the winning score at my clubs one next week will be less than 6 over for the two rounds.

I am the 17th best player at my club (by handicap) and I doubt all will turn up for the competition, if I put together two rounds in the mid 70s I might even have a chance, all it takes is for the better players to have an off day.
 
Realistically there are probably only a dozen or so (and that's pushing it) who can win the gross prize at Royal Ascot which is why the net prize (Derek Lane Trophy) was introduced. Both events have their own honour board so the gross winner still gets his moment recorded for posterity. As it happens, I have always recognised the club champion as the best gross score even though I am only interested in the net prize as that is all I have a shot at.

I'm on record at the club saying I'll jump naked into the pond on 18 if I ever win the gross prize
