Club Captain Cost

One of my friends has been captain at a municipal course, multiple times actually as nobody else wants to do it. The cost to him is time not money.

Captain at my club is a massive expense. Must be £10k+ I’m probably under playing it. But when I see the Ferrari or Aston Martin in the captain’s parking space every year I realise the cost is no issue.

It all depends on the club. Some clubs they are effectively CEO and there's all sorts going on. Others it's much less hight profile and status.

Also depends on the individual, I don't know even who is captain at one club I'm a member of. 😁

I know at our club it is a difficult role to fill. The club is privately owned and run as a company, the guy that owns it isn't into golf (his dad was - he actually built the courses from farmland), so the club tends to operate on a policy of "as long as it makes money" these days. We obviously have a committee but they have little input in how the club operates, rather controlling the golf side of things for the calendar, comps, handicap sec etc. I'd imagine the Captain is basically chair for those meetings.

We really struggle to get people to step up - this years Captain did it about 7 or 8 years ago and his vice the same - I'm not sure who is in line for vice captaincy next year..

I've said I'll take a turn at it - but I can't do it until the youth has his independence and is able to drive himself to golf comps through the summer - that just takes up too much of my time at the moment.

We've struggled in previous years to get someone to do it. It's not the cost or the compulsory attendance of functions, we don't have any, it's the attending of club committee meetings zzzzzzzz. But, this year's Captain is a well liked young lad, instead of an old fuddy duddy. I hope he's going to be a breath of fresh air and make some changes
