Pretty new to this whole golf club thing but was chatting with a fella at the club who said he was asked to be captain in the past but couldnt afford it??

Where does the cost hes referring to come from? Prizes for captains day? Round of drink at social events?
Is there anything else im missing??

I was chatting to an ex captain and lady captain at my club at the weekend and they both commented about teh cost. In fact they were husband and wife, but had not been captains in the same year, which did seem daft and had ended up costing them even more money.

Most of the cost issues they alluded to were attending functions, dinners, prize-givings. Then throw in pertrol and costs for going to meetings, away fixtures, social trips etc etc.

They felt that it was hard to say no to anything when club captain, so it all just mounted up during the year.

From what I have heard it is expensive as you are expected to attend everything and are expected to be the first to put your hand in your pocket. Prizes for captains day alone must cost a few hundred quid.

Look on the plus side though, at least you do not have to queue on the first tee.:eek:;)

It's definitely an expensice job, but fortunately im a miserable git so getting an invite to be captain is something ill never have to worry about :D

it all depends on the club he is captain at,if a muni or pay as you go type it is probably cheaper than say a private members club.My club gives Mr captain £3000 to help with cost but i heard one past capt say it cost him over £18000 to cover his costs for the year,i think that's why most captains are business men or have a few bob .

I have spoke to a few ex captains at our club and the costs have varied between 2 and 5 thousand. They don't have to pay subs for the year that they are captain so this offsets the cost a bit.

Having just completed my year as Captain I would say there's no simple answer to this. Yes, it certainly costs you a few quid but how much will depend on the type of club, the level of involvement with other local clubs in terms of social events etc. I liken it to taking a holiday.... you can do it for minimum cost with cheap flights to Benidorm or you can push the boat out with a round the world cruise. Most people do something in between. There can sometimes an element of showing off so don't believe everything you get told, I've seen Captains inflate what they really spent to look "better" etc. Don't see the point personally as it can put off some good people from even considering it.

The main costs are Captain's day, guests at all the dine-ins (I had 6-8 on average but you could have 20) and most of all an awful lot of time. Total cost for me was around £2500 and the club contributed a bar tab for entertaining guests on top of this of around £1800 as well as help with taxi's. All in all a super year, have made lifelong friends from the other clubs not to mention the chance to raise a decent amount for some very special charities. Worth every penny.
