Cleaning your clubs

I was just wondering how everybody here cleans their clubs. Is it just a case of a bucket of water and fairy liquid, or do you meticulously scrub off every bit of dirt with a brush?

If they get dirty after a shot i will give them a quick wipe with my towel,saves having to do them all in one go which can be a pain in the arse,plus i hate using a dirty iron-it wont help using a club with mud on it!!

If you dip the end of your towel in water before you play, then your clubs can be cleaned after every shot. Just remember not to leave the manky wet towel in the car boot.

I smear mine with dog food and get my brothers labrador to lick them clean... works every time

Soapy water and scrub with a brush every other week, and wipe down/brush grooves as required when playing .

a very little bit of liquid soap in warm (not hot) water and scrub with a nail brush, towel dry and put away after every round,takes 10 mins. Use a towel and groove cleaner during the round.

I find this method works astonishingly well for cleaning golf clubs and balls.

Put your clubs in a bucket and add a handful of soap powder (Daz makes your whites whiter, or so I hear) and fill with hot water. Leave overnight or maybe a day or two.

Then, simply, remove the clubs one by one, give them a quick brush and dry and hey presto! Your clubs will be so shiny after this.

So you are putting steel clubs into a bucket of water for two days. Hmm, sounds like a reciepe for rust to me.

Straight from my higher chemistry textbook.

For iron (the prinicipal element in steel) to rust both water and air must be present.

If the clubs are fully submerged in the water im pretty sure that air cannot be in contact with them

Water and oxygen. There will be enough oxygen dissolved in the water for the club to rust. I used to put my old wedge in a bucket of salt water to rust it up a bit, and it always worked.

What advantage does rust on wedges give ? Is it more grip/bite ?

I've noticed a few rusty looking wedges in some pro's bags and was wondering how and why they were like that.

I take an old washing-up bucket (whatever you call an oblong bucket). Fill it to below hozel depth with warm water and a splash of car shampoo.

Dip in the club, give it a brush with an old toothbrush, remove and leave to drip.

Once I've done the lot (all 13), I dry them off with a microfibre cloth and enjoy the shine!

If I do the grips, I use as hot water as I can bear and washing up liquid....

Here's a tip.....if you have an old brass putter (I have a Ping one) and it's all discoloured, soak it in a small container for a few hours with a denture cleaning tablet.
It removes all the micro-dirt. Let it dry and then polish off with some duraglit....just watch out though, it'll come up so shiny, you might not be able to look at it in the sun.

The only benfit of a rusty club is to provide a dull non reflective surface to minimise glare.

It does not give it a softer feel, nor does it add spin. That is all an old wives tale.

Warm water, fairy liquid and a scrubbing brush woks for me. Does wonders for the grips every couple of months or so as well.

I just use a bit of spit and polish on course to clean my club after every shot (and maybe a tee to get any mud out if its wet or I've hit it heavey - again). I'll give them a clean every couple of weeks in just warm water with an old nail brush and in the summer will do the the grips every two weeks as dust and sweat tends to build up especially ont he wedges.

Always wipe them over with a damp end of the bag towel after every shot. But for a full on clean between rounds........"Hands that do dishes, can feel soft as you like, with mild green Fairy liquid"

And i usually clean them after i've done the dishes!!!

I read a test in Golf World that a brand new wedge gave a spin rate of 9,000rpm, where as a 3 yr old wedge gave a spin rate of 12,000rpm.

I use a brush and towel after every shot then once a month a full scrub.
