Clean air zones

My daughter got caught out by the Birmingham one.

She was very annoyed as her eco friendly diesel is allowed in many other cities without charge.

Bit like "paying" to offset the impact if a flight. It cannot.
I'm always surprised by the small amount you can 'offset' your carbon footprint by on airline websites - if this really small cost sorted the problem it could be fixed by a very small passenger tax increase.

Listening to the lady on the BEEB this morning

She is a care worker and reckons the charge will mean nearly 30% of her income going on it.

Having a scrappage scheme is all very good but what if you do have the capital to fund the rest.

The grant is not going to go very far

Grant payment options

For cars, motorcycles and wheelchair accessible cars or vans there are eight grant payment options:

  • Scrap a car - £2,000

TFL has once again messed things up.
Firstly, the Congestion Charge doesn't apply to ev at the moment, so where do they drive without adding to the congestion that only ICE vehicles create?
ULEZ is just a way to hit the easy target. If only 10% of cars will have to pay, why not leave people to change when they can.
Why are classic cars exempt? Its no good argueing they only do a small amount of travel, it's still travel and pollution.
Why isn't there a charge placed on the shipping entering the Port of London? A container ship or cruise ship pollute thousands of times more than even the oldest bus.

New LEZ introduced in Glasgow this summer and 80% of council vehicles do not meet the emission standard. Will the Council pay the fines to the Council??? 😳

They can be converted , that's what tfl did to all buses who don't meet standard

A point often missed that this "money grab" is used directly to improve public transport..the money is ring fenced for transport improvements in the areas required rather than being able to used for other things

Ulez in greater London goes directly to improving transport in greater London rather than the overall budget
Don't go throwing actual information around, never popular...

Rubbish. Heathrow is now in the ULEZ zone. They (Heathrow Airport Ltd) have been charging £5 drop off charges to discourage cars entering the airport and improve public transport, now they are in the ULEZ there will be a further £12.50 charge to access the airport (although to a different body). The public transport access from anywhere other than London to Heathrow is virtually non-existent, and there have been no noticeable improvements for years, even access to the most recent building T5 relies mostly on the road links.

So basically my seat Leon FR 2.0 ltr diesel costs £20 per year to tax because it is ultra low with CO emissions. It was registered in september 2014. It would now cost me £12.50 a day to drive in London. However if I bought it on January 1st 2015. It would cost me nothing. How’s that right. It’s a money making scam.
Basically dirty cars kill kids but for £12.50 a day it don’t. Really.
two weeks ago I was stood at the RAF memorial at Runnymede. It was a constant watch seeing planes taking off from Heathrow. Don’t that affect the air quality. Personally I think it’s a rammel idea.
it’s like the M1 near Sheffield Meadowhall. It’s 60 mph for everyone because of air quality. So why are electric cars having to stick to 60 mph.

Is it, plenty of trains go to Heathrow, you train to London and connect.
How is that "non existent"

That only works if the funds from other sources are not cut in response to the increase in funds from the emissions tax.

Is it just people whose cars are not exempt from the charge who are against this?
Could well be but seeing as a certain group of people told us to buy diesel and get on our bikes and travel for jobs you can hardly blame folk for complaining.

Strangely enough, the bus from Guildford stops just outside the door to terminal 5. It's now our airport and terminal of choice.
