Yesterday I was lucky enough to be invited to join a group of golfers for a marathon two rounder to play Gullane 2 and Gullane 1 in a regular invitational match between Nairn GC and Gullane GC.

The match comprised of teams of 8 playing 2 rounds of foursomes, a format much underused and underrated amongst club golfers nowadays. I have to say I had a brilliant day, partly thanks to the glorious sunshine we enjoyed yesterday.

I wish I had taken my camera because the views from Gullane Hill over to Muirfield were just unrivalled yesterday. Doh!

In the morning match I teamed up with one of guys coming up to Castle Stuart, Tommy McLean, who like me had been roped in at the last minute to represent Team Nairn. Turns out we're pretty handy together as foursomes opponents as we only missed one fairway and hit most greens in reg for a tidy 5&4 victory against lower handicap opponents, who seemed to find every bunker on the course. Lesson to be learned there. Keep it in play in foursomes. Pars are usually good enough.

Great game and great company and we were round all 18 in 3 hours dead. What a nice change that was when there are four in the group! After the morning matches Nairn led 3 and a half to a half.

Following a rather liquid lunch involving much Kummel I was paired up with another Castle Stuarter, Dave Canavan, again against lower handicap opposition. Teeing off at the first on Gullane 1 I found the need to focus hard as I was by then "rather loose" shall we say. Needless to say I hit my best drive of the year! After much good, even play we got hit with a barrage of 4 birdies and an eagle (in foursomes!!) to find ourselves 6 down with six to play. Our opposition sank everything from 25 feet and in. We weren't even playing badly. Glad to say we retrieved a few but still ended up getting beaten 4&3. Again the round took only 3 hours for all 18. Joy.

The afternoon matches produced a tie for an overall win by Nairn after that good morning session.

Spectacular hospitality by Gullane GC during the meal afterwards and many stories from the day (foursomes always produces the best banter). So thanks to them for everything. I have to say that on a day like yesterday it doesn't get much better. Sun, golf and banter...with the odd Kummel. Paradise.

Very good, Allan. The greens were probably even better and faster than on Gullane 1 where they had been letting the grass grow for a few days for maintenance. It's a good, proper course. Nothing to criticize. Nice, tight turf and the rough is very penal. Always is.

The Gullane members we played with hadn't played there much lately as they prefer to play no. 1 which is usually quieter but they said they were going to make a point of playing it more often again after yesterday. They had kinda forgotten how good it is.

I actually don't think that the price difference between 1 and 2 is justified....don't think that 1 is that much better than 2 if at all.Looking forward to a trip up as it's been a while.

Always like Gullane No2. The greens have been good there this year, no doubt about it.

Yesterday was a superb day, I was looking "down the coast" from our 13th tee yesterday afternoon and wishing I had been "down the coast" as the weather was just so good for mid October.

Glad to hear you had a good day John.

I agree. Number 2 is my favourite of the 3 courses for value for money but Number 1 has some spectacular views which you don't see from the other 2 courses. If they were the same price I'd choose it.

I'm just back from playing Gullane No3. Personally, I do prefer No2, but 3 was in great nick although play was agonisingly slow. The wind blew, but it stayed dry. £22 a round so great value too.
