Civil Partnership

This is the result of bad legislation.

They should have just opened up marriage to same sex couples in the first place instead of contriving civil partnerships. Sadly, at that time, they weren't prepared to stand up against prejudice and religious bigotry and here we are!

However, since civil partnerships exist it's only fair they should be available to mixed sex couples.

FD, surely with marriage available to all now CP serve no purpose. Scrap them, problem sorted. I can't see the benefit of keeping them going.
The judgement was 2-1, all 3 judges have said the Government need to sort it out or the findings will go the other way next time.

Seems pretty rough on people who are already in a CP?

Plenty of people don't like marriage for a variety of reasons so I can understand why some would prefer a civil partnership. It wasn't my view, we held on for years in the hope that marriage would come in, but I can appreciate that some have a different opinion.

Whilst I agree with your post earlier, the government are to blame.

A marriage isn't to be entered in to lightly, and I don't feel there should be an alternative that people choose because they don't want to get married.

My my choice would be that anyone in a civil partnership can have it upgraded (for want of a better word) to marriage and that civil partnerships be consigned to history.

Anyone in a civil partnership has the right to convert it to a marriage but not everyone has chosen to do that. Indeed, some still choose to enter into civil partnerships when marriage is now available. I really don't think you can force these people to change.

It's not a lack of commitment that means some prefer a CP, incidentally, just that they think marriage has a questionable history. They reject the institution but still want the legal protections in a modern context. As I said, that wasn't my take on it but I can understand anyone with that point of view.

Personally, I don't see the problem with opening up CP to straight couples.

I didn't realise people could convert. IMO that's as far a step as needs to be offered.

If people wish to remain in a civil partnership then that's fine. But, for me, civil partnerships shouldn't have existed in the first place. It should just have been marriage for all.

Im not religious in the slightest and have no great thoughts on marriage being the be all and end all.

I could be wrong, but I don't recall there being a campaign for an alternative to marriage prior to civil partnership coming about.

I know straight and gay couples married (civil partners) and not. And they aren't viewed or treated differently by anyone I know.

It it seems to me that its a choice being asked for that doesn't need to exist. A marriage surely is a choice made that accepts all that it comes with, if not then it simply becomes a way to gain tax perks Andy rights. And simply a legal document which is imo not why anyone should enter marriage or (currently) a civil partnership.

I agree with much of this but the genie is out of the bottle, I think. I don't see how CPs can be abolished so the only option must be to open them up to all.

Neither as mine but Marraige itself has the religious connotations, no matter how non-religious you make it. Is the word, not your event, that has it.

I can't argue with what other people associate with the word marriage but it has absolutely no religious connotations to me.
