When you chip with a putting stroke using wedge do you grip it like a wedge/iron or use your putting grip ? And why?

Chipping with a wedge I use a normal grip. But when chipping with a hybrid I would use my putter grip. That's because I grip down, have the club much more upright and heel off the ground, so in that position it's better if it feels like I'm putting.

In all my years, I've never used a putting stroke with a wedge.

I would do something "similar" to a putting stroke when doing a chip-and-run with a iron less than 40° loft. Then it is normal non-putting grip.

I'm absolutely crap at short chips. I'm still playing around a little with doing the short ones with a hybrid and a putting swing with bent elbows. I find with the longer chip+rolls that if I use a 8 iron or something similar it rolls up the face on me and leaves me way short if I use the putter swing, so I go back to regular grip and use a 54 usually. The worst thing for me is to walk up to the green and find my ball 4 feet in the thicker grass and not much green to work with. I might as well just pick the ball up and walk to the next hole. If I'm given the choice I usually pull out the 54-58 or 64 and put it up in the air. They "say" you shouldn't do that.....

You know what, I do use a putting stroke when sometimes chipping but have never thought about using a putting grip.It might be something I could try.

Loads of these at our place. Around the back and sides of the greens there's a foot wide band of fairway length grass then it's straight into thick lush rough about 4 inches deep that holds the ball an inch off the ground. It took me a while to figure out the most effective way to deal with it: sand wedge, toe down, firm putting stroke with normal grip - the ball pops up nice and high without much spin but doesn't have too much forward momentum when it lands.
The guys playing "proper" wedge shots are generally airmailing it through the green.

I’d never used putting grip either until I was at practice area yesterday

On Sat I was at away course and the fairways weren’t at their usual best and it hurt my chip shots round the green. After the round I realised I should’ve used hybrid for those shots even though its not something I’ve practised, hence the visit to short game area yesterday to see how it works etc
Anyway, whether it’s the longer shaft or something else, I found pace, line and strike really difficult using my usual grip but much easier with my putting grip
Tried using putting grip on chips with a wedge and although a bit more consistent strike they all came up short on length

I guess I must be shortening the swing (&speed) so its more like a putt when I'm using putting grip

I've never thought about it until this thread, and even then I have had to really think about it 🤪 . It's something I do naturally. Anyway, with a wedge I keep my wrists and arms locked but I grip using my 'regular club grip'. I also chip using a hybrid but for that I use my putter grip and hit it like a putter. No, don't ask for logic but anyway, it works and that is all that matters.

I was back at short game practice area this morning to play about with hybrid for bump/run shots over diff distances, used putting grip and stood a little taller and it worked well so I’ll try on course if the shot presents itself over the next couple of weeks where the usual wedge chip is too risky
Also had time to try a few flop shots (a shot I never practice or attempt on course) and it was very pleasing nearly holing out twice with the 54 wedge… but will I have the mutts to try that on course

Jimmy Bullard chips with a claw grip and close to a putting stroke

One of the guys in our swindle has chipping issues so has tried it and seems to work better for him - close to the green though

Chipping around the green has been the weakest, and most frustrating part of my game.
However today I was chipping with a nine iron and changed to use my putting grip. The results were amazing.
