Chipping on the green

Just because you can do it doesn't mean it should be done. You can drive a car with your feet if you want to! It doesn't make it a good idea

If its the appropiate shot to be taken then there is no reason that it cannot be done - pros do it , seen plenty of people do it. There is nothing wrong at all with doing it. You can putt with your driver if you so wish

Your missing the point. We're not saying it can't be done, we're saying it shouldn't.

Pro's are playing for substantial financial gain. We're playing for a tenner. If i was sure i could pick the ball clean without damaging the green I'd consider it but out of respect for other users of the green and the work of the green keepers I'll stick with my putter

The need for it arises so seldom, if it is the right shot then you should play it. it is highly unlikely you will need to do it from the middle of the green. impact on other players lines would be minimal.

It is also quite easy to clip a ball using the bounce of the club and not damage the green as long as the green isn't really soft.

Again - why "shouldnt it be done"

Seen bigger pitch marks on the green compared to any mark made from a chip shot.

Never have and never will. I think it it is the wrong thing to do (yes I understand it is legal before anyone jumps in to tell me so and increase their catalogue of 20,000 posts of inanity by another notch) and I frown on anyone that would do it, has done it or says they would do it in future. The reason being that it isn't right in my view. No-one's score is more important than the well-being of the golf course.

I respect your point of view and clearly each player has their own views. Mind you I've played a few courses where no end of chipping would only improve the greens. Out of interest why do you think it isn't right, especially when tour players do it? If you had a chance of a win in a huge comp, and were faced with a shot that would take you off the edge of a green, flirting with the fringe, and the chip and run or a simple lofted shot, would you never consider it?

If the pin was placed in a position where a chip isn't necassary, there is no choice to be made. If the greenkeepers tuck pins away, tough.

Just out of interest............

How many golf clubs prohibit golfers from having a practice swing on the teeing ground and yet allow people to take divots out of their greens when chipping?

Yes, the tour pros do it very occasionally but saving one shot can earn them huge money and they know what they are doing.
Joe Blogs off 20 something playing in the monthly comp may not be so precise.

I know if I hit my approach shot onto a green and found it in a divot 4x3x1in, I'd be miffed to say the least.

On our 10th, it is quite possible to be on the green and be forced to chip if the pin is back right and you land front right. Depending on how tight the grass is around the green a wedge or iron from the green can be the best play.

I know that Mill Ride has a local rule (illegal though it is) that bans chipping from at least one of their greens but I don't think I have ever seen anything at any other club that says anything about it.

Club local rules cannot stop you from chipping on a green in a competition.
They can throw you off the course but it would be an interesting court case.
