Chipping on the green

Personally I think the Original Poster should be horse whipped for chipping on the green, or even thinking about doing so! Greens should be designed so this is never necessary, but I have come across kidney shaped greens where you can be on the green, but have fringe grass or semi-rough between you and the hole. I always try to putt over such obstructions.

Horse whipped ?!

Nothing wrong with chipping on the green - perfectly legitimate shot

Would love to see a putt executed over semi-rough 😳

If it is that rough, I just try to hit the putt on the green to about the right distance, keeping as close to the edge as possible, and worry about the longer than normal putt afterwards.

Well nothing in the rules of golf to force you to use a putter on the green, but think how much work the greenkeepers put in to produce a near perfect grass surface for you. Also I'm not keen on putting over divot holes, even if carefully repaired!

Umm a pitch mark can make just as much damage as someone chiping.

The green keepers but work in all over the course - let's not play on the course in fear of damage

My putting is a damned sight better than my chipping, which is probably the weakest part of my game. I managed to shank a 15 yard chip in my last round!

Practise your chipping then - that way you could have the ability to chip over semi rough

Ahhh the shanked chip, it's a thing of beauty. Sometimes they stay on the very right edge of the green.

One of our pp's is the green keeper. If i pulled my wedge out of the green he'd smack me round the head with it.

some of you are too precious, its still just a bit of grass, just cut a bit shorter. have i done it yep many times incl the old course at st andrews and no not always picked totally cleanly, would i do it again - yes if i thought it was my best option

I would have a few times at an old club (kidney shaped green with a hump in the fold) but there was a (non-comforming) Local Rule preventing it!

The condition of the greens where you roll the putt over the grass surface is far more critical than the fairways from where you (hopefully) hit the ball into the air.

And ? What about pitch marks and spike marks etc etc - any small divot from a chip ( if one is actually taken ) can just be repaired like a pitch mark.
