ok time to bite th ebullet and realise if i wann aget better at this game im gonna have to bump n run some shots....

ive always been a sandwedge man and love flying it to the hole but all week at my club the front pin positions have been real tough to get close to

i have been leaving myself with no option but to leave a long put or...Chip n run.

i have never been confident of getting the pace right of a chip n run and my experience has told me the high lob shots dropping next to the pin have got a very high risk factor even for the pros

so now i need some help..

how am i to learn to get the ball 5foot or closer form 30 yards and in when i gotta run the ball through rough fringes and fairway..

all the help greatly appreciated.

Buy a chipper :D

Practice with a variety of clubs. Club selection for me depends on how much carry VS how much roll I am looking for.

I was told (and it works) weight on front foot, ball back in stance. Don't break your wrists. Practice, practice, practice

What you are looking for is to get the ball to land on the green where there are less variables and then run out so depending on where the flag is and how much room you have will dictate what sort of club you need to be thinking about

Start with something you feel comfy with. Maybe an 8 iron.

I play c n r's a bit like a putt. Very "still" action in the hands and arms. I put the ball back, stand a little open and push the hands forwards, a little like "hooding" the face.

I try to take a "nip" off the turf and trust the loft to knock it forward a few feet/yards (dependent on length) and let it run out.

Once you are getting a consistent shot, try it with less and more loft to see what happens.

5 foot is going some......maybe not from the fringe, but certainly from 20 yards!!

If there's no green to work with then you can't have the RUN part of a chip and run :D I'd be dropping them more or less right on the flag, or literally just short, from a moderate height if there wasn't any green to work with. Last thing I'd want to do is either be short of the green or run way past. I wouldn't be doing full swing Mickelson lobs either unless I was in knee deep rough or the lie was terrible.

Bump and run is fine on a links course in the middle of Summer but way too unpredictable at the moment.. just in my opinion of course :)

Just pitch it in a spin it back 20ft!!!

Seriously though, practise is the only way mate, loads of it.

i have been paranoid about my wedges not spinnin enough i am think that i should of perhaps kept my vokeys and just rebent them back up 3 degrees.. i have got over the 'my equipment isnt right for me' as i believe everything in the back is sorted but definitely my wedges could spin that litte more. my old cast pings spin a bit more then my mizunos..i might get some mack daddys ??????

If your signature is correct go for some ProV1's and you will improve your spin without changing your clubs.

The 8 iron bump and run is by far and away the most versatile and well used shot that I ever play and I couldn't have described how I do it any better than RGdave has here. It's like a long, fast putt.
Don't break your wrists though or it'll all go breasts ascending. Concentrate on a follow through at least as long as your backswing as well, otherwise you'll stab at it.
I'm not normally one for practice swings but I always take a few for this type of shot to groove that action and get that nice neat nip off the turf.
Once you've got that it's only a matter of altering swing length / speed for distance control.
Much more reliable and predictable than any wedge in my experience.

Rikard is ya man Lewis over on Videojug.

I love practicing shortgame, chip and runs are my favourite practice.

I can literaly spend 3-4 hours some days practicing them. But you have to keep on top if them to be good as the pace of greens constantly changes

With a lot of practice you can chip and run with most of the clubs in your bag.

If flags are up front and there is little green to play with, it simply becomes a matter of judgement. The ball will run well on well cut fringes and fairways.

The lofted shot works its best on softer greens than hard ones (well it does for me) I dont have a lot of dificulty getting the ball to spin back or stop dead on softer greens.

The chip and run is a judgement skill that simply requires the mechanics of a putting swing or mini golf swing and paying attention to how much swing with what club creates what type of chip distance, repetative practice will give you this, then its down to judgement.
