Inspired by a conversation with a (non golfing) work mate who held the view that golf was only for the rich , I pointed out that a round of golf at the 2 nearest munis to me ( Larkhall and Strathclyde Park ) costs the princely sum of....£4.70 for nine holes (£4.10 off peak) and only £2.10 for juniors ......which made me wonder...........

Where are the cheapest green fees in the country?
Is there anywhere in the UK where you can get a round of golf which cost less than a round of drinks afterwards.

Roundhay Municipal in Leeds is: -

£13.50 weekends & Bank Hols
£10.50 Weekdays
£7.30 (I think) for twilight after 1600 I believe.

All for 18 holes and with the added bonus of £2.30 a pint.

If that doesn’t get me in the ruinning for captancy then I don't know what will :p

This'll be a short thread trying to beat that :D

Down here in Sussex, I don't think you'll get change from a tenner, even for 9 hols round a muni

Pennington Flash golf course in Leigh is a 9 hole muni and was £4.60 a knock however think its £5.10 now

Aslo Brackley in Salford is around that price

Not great courses but good value

18 hole munis

Haigh Hall in Wigan is £14
Beacon £18
Duxbury £18

Not too bad

Strathclyde is where I play when I can only manage 9 holes, as a student costs me £2.10 to play as well! Nice 9 hole course I think!
Even better, it costs me £5 for £18 at any of the other courses, like hollenbush!

online teetimes and direct teetimes do some very cheap off peak deals at decent tracks,ie; shaw hill satday@07:04 for only £13.

Most of the muni's near me are £15+ a round aswell.

I didn't get much change outta that at Strathy 18yrs ago!!

Back in somewhere like 89/90 my mates and I would take it in turns to call the then switchboard over in the Motherwell side of the pond at 7.15 every saturday so we could get 2 good tee times, then it was bags and trolleys on either the 201 or 63 bus, brilliant fun.

One thing I found quite sad the last time I was up is the tree on the 3rd has gone, that feature made it a smashing par 3.

I haven't played it since I won their Open in 1999 so may give it a go next week.

Is that because your still barred after winning their open with such a low score and your horse chewed the flowers in the carpark ? ;)

I am quite lucky that being a member of Rothesay I can access to loads of Golf Courses in Argyll and Bute for the pricey sum of £7.50 per course.

I get to play Millport, Port Bannatyne, Cowal, Kyles of Bute, Blairmore, Innellen, Gourock, Skelmorlie and others. Its just a local agreement between the clubs, sadly Machrihannish have not joined in!!!!!
