Changing the course mid competition...

does any club do main work at the weekend, none of the ones i'm a member at do, so that leaves during the week.

Agreed. Of which there are 5 days to choose from. I have lost count of the amount of times MAJOR course work is carried out on a Tuesday.

Until you've experienced it time and time and time again you may not understand the impact.

Not sure I also mentioned but the holes were in the same position as when I played on Friday...imagine that for the Men's medal!

Let's go with Monday, Thursday or Friday this week. No competitions on those days.

they did sanding on our greens on Tuesday, which is one of the two days Ladies have comps. i did ask our Course manager on wednesday why he did it on Tues and his reply was, the kiln dried sand arrived on monday and they wanted it on the greens ASAP so it got washed in by the rain that was forecaste could wash it in. so they were doing for the benifit of the course. could this not be the case here?

It really does show a disregard doesn't it.

Did that affect the Ladies comp though?

we get it plenty they only change our flags twice a week Tues and Friday and they are the same until the following tuesday. We have had plenty of instances where stuffs been done on a friday . in fact ladies get the best greens, on Tues as they get new pin positions and the greens are always ironed on a Tuesday. We are lucky if they even cut the greens on a Sat at ours, so its not true ladies always treated as Second Class, at Nairn its the Men:LOL:

Lucky for the ladies at Nairn then. Trust me it is the minority.

Well that also happened later in the round. I was in the rough between the 12th and 15th. Greenkeeper sat waiting for the guys to play up 15 and started to mow the rough around the trees just as I addressed the ball. As we currently have Charley Hull, Meghan MacLaren and Becky Brewerton regularly playing I have to wonder if they'd also receive the same level of respect...

You have my sympathy but it does happen to blokes as well sometimes...I remember one time I was playing as a visitor at a course, the name of which I cannot recall, and my approach to a green fell twenty yards short and a bit left of the green in a nice lush bit of rough. I reached my ball and was addressing it, ready to play my shot when a greenkeeper approached from behind on his mower, cutting the rough. I stepped back from the ball, expecting him to pull over and let me play the shot but no....he drove right up behind me and circled around me cutting the rough, leaving me on my own little green island some 6ft in diameter!!

Said greenkeeper then followed us round for the next few holes and on at least two occasions came up behind us and started mowing the tee whilst we were teeing off.

First thing I'd say is that sanding & brushing the greens does not really count as major works. Its a routine operation done many times through the season. At least, it is at our place. That said there's still no excuse for scheduling it during a ladies' competition. The comp's diary is readily available and so comps are easily avoided. Ok, at ours like most places, most men's comps are at weekends whereas most ladies' are midweek - and work does generally take place during the week. But we'd not do it during a Ladies comp any more than we would do it in the men's midweek medal.

The use of kiln dried sand does have weather constraints and needs to scheduled for when settled dry weather is anticipated. If the vagaries of British weather mess up the scheduled day - then it needs to be done another day. But generally the work is not so urgent that if it cant be done today, then it must be done tomorrow and sod the ladies comp. There's still no reason not to reschedule around the competition.

The major work of "greens week" - ie when the seriously disruptive work take place such as hollow tining, vertidraining, graden work etc - is a different kettle of fish and that is always programmed by collaboration between greens cttee and comps cttee - so that no comps are scheduled either during the work or in the immediate aftermath.

Seems to me that the ladies at Amanda's place have a serious complaint that needs addressing - and they should not let it drop.

Our GK never change the course during the comps.
Sat club / men’s there is only one in work to change the holes and position the tees.
Tues ladies day/ comp they do all the work early as the ladies don’t start until 9am.
They then do all the maintenance on machinery in the sheds sharpen mowers etc.
It’s always been like this 12 yrs since I joined anyway.
It makes perfect sense and stops any confrontation.
The ladies pay the same as me and are entitled to a course fit for competition.
If you have a greenkeeper that’s delibaretly causing problems that needs addressing ASAP.

I agree 100%. I'm not sure there's enough desire for them to change. There is an arrogance about the club imo. It's a great course and beautiful setting/clubhouse. There's a waiting list for male 7 day membership and I don't think they care about Ladies and Juniors so don't do much to entice either. Oh - they can make life difficult for the seniors too!

I should have remembered the only time I played a mixed open at the club before we joined. Jam packed full field - they're always over subscribed...greens had been hollow tined or whatever it's called - really deep ones. Every time I hit a green it exploded and was like putting on a ploughed field. Apart from Club Champs which follows the Glazerite Pro Trophy they do what they like when they like. The course is great then but we can't get on it for a week - after which they dig things up again.

We don't have a greens/maintenance week. Just work on them whenever there isn't a men's comp :(

That sounds like your not enjoying it to me.
Taking the members for granted is very poor no matter how good the course is .
So maybe the ladies need to vote with their feet and leave en mass.
But arrogant committees might like that outcome.
Work has to be done but that sounds poor imo.

I remember playing a society day at a club that shall remain nameless.

We got there told right you have two temporary greens (for arguement sake it's 7 and 15)

I'm first group. 2nd hole wild drive does down another fairway. Can make out the green but got to take over a tree. Nail it. Best 7 iron I've ever hit slap bang middle of green.

Get up there the greens keeper has taken the green out to do work and another temp at the front (30 yards from where my ball finished) was fuming.

Soon as we finished the green was brought back into play. Hardly fair for the field

That annoyed me enough so I can't imagine how you feel having this constantly at your own club
