Embarrassingly I've never changed spikes/cleats on any of my golf shoes and never really thought about it before. However a couple of the spikes have snapped on my TW13 shoes so need replacing.

So a couple of questions.

1. How easy is to do this yourself?

2. Are all spikes suitable with say a universal connection or do some only work for certain golf shoes?

3. Any recommendations for a good spike?

you'll need to order the specific spike for your brand of shoe, they are easy to change. Its worth buying a spike wrench though rather then the crappy little prong thing that sometimes comes with shoes.

My personal favouite are Pro Stingers,

Changing them is easy if they are not welded to your shoe through being there a long time and/or overtightened. If they are difficult to get off, the softspikes Cleat Ripper is ideal. It will remove any spike of any type. It comes either sold seperately for £4-£5 or in a pack with replacement spikes for a little more.

Is the right answer. Take them out and clean them and the fitting on the shoe regularly and they come out no problem. It's when you don't clean them and they fill with crap that you have a problem. However, that doesn't help you as you already have a problem. You either need a proper wrench to fit your spikes or a pair of pliers.

I had problems changing cleats in lunar 2,our pro failed to get them all out (but still sold me replacements).Once the originals are out they're fine, a fine drill bit in the cordless cured it, obviously being careful not to go too far.

Changing spikes is as easy as sleeping, get yourself one of these £1.00 from Sports Direct, link below.

And check what make your spikes are. There are different fasting types, check this site out and they tell you want you need to know.

Sorry, but those types are shoite. After a while the plastic bit, where the metal bit enters it, ends up rounded off, making it completely useless.
I use a bradawl to remove all the small stones that get wedged in the holes of the spikes and then use a good quality ratcheted spike wrench........very therapeutic.

I use one of these:

The cheap spike removers work ok if the spikes are not stuck. If they are stuck then the softspikes cleat ripper (referenced earlier) is simple, quick, very effective and reasonably cheap. In my experience it will take out anything and won't damage the shoe. Can't reuse the spikes after using it though.
