A good friend booked the ‘Stay & Play’ package via Your Golf Travel and thought I’d let folks know how it went.
The package was £550 for two and included a superior twin room in the main hotel (we were on the 8th floor), a round of golf each day (2) and breakfast.
Never been to the venue before, but as a 5 star, expectations were high.
It’s a massive site and accommodation is mainly in the hotel, but split across a couple of cheaper options on/just off site and some lodges for larger groups.
As the site is so widespread, free shuttle buses are on hand to take you wherever you want, at a moments notice. To golf, dinner, driving range etc.
The hotel was decent, albeit wouldn’t put it at 5 star. The staff are friendly in the majority. There’s around 8 places to eat. We chose Steak by Six, the fancy one with a set menu at £80 a head and it was worth it. There’s an American diner, Chinese, amongst others. The breakfast was decent and there’s loads of bars.
The guests are golfers, spa visitors (we could have used in the package) and the obligatory weddings.
Newport is a few minutes away and Cardiff about 20 mins, for those who want to venture out.
We played the Roman Road on the first day and the Montgomerie on day two. It rained a couple of days previous to our visit, so the hard pan fairways played well. Greens were fabulous.
We didn’t play the 2010 course, but just looking at it, everyone should!
Took a buggy day one and the cart path rule makes a round not as enjoyable as walking. We hired electric trollies for the Montgomery and had a much better day, albeit clocking up over 18,500 steps.
Everything is expensive in the pro shops and buggies/trollies for two is fifty quid. Halfway house has the usual sausage rolls (naff), drinks and snacks.
If you fancy the destination, I’d say it was reasonable value, but I’d try to book all three courses to see full benefit. Could be a good couples break, incorporating golf, spa and nice surroundings and choice of food.
Very well run in all aspects.
