Been selected to play for the club in a friendly fixture away at Caversham Heath. The downside is it clashes with the monthly stableford. Has anyone played Caversham and what's it like and is it worth missing the chance to cut my handicap for?

I'm a regular in these type of fixtures for my club and love playing them. However with it clashing with the stableford I want to know if its a decent course, not too tricked up before committing to the match and not the comp

It's a good honest course
if teh weather is bad teh back nine is open and hard work
The front 9 are more interesting
First hole is boring and short - gets better after that

Its not very often you get the chance to play for your club however you can get .1 back anytime

Representing your club is a far greater reason to play than just chopping it round for your h/cap. If you don't want to play the club game stop putting your name forward for the matches and let someone else play for their club (someone who might appreciate the chance).

The issue is about the match clashing with the stableford and the quality of the course at Caversham. Having never played it, if its one of these fiddly courses, lots of cross over holes or generally dull and uninteresting I'd rather have the opportunity to defend my handicap and let someone else play. Usually there is no conflict and with an unbeaten run stretching back to nearly 20 games now I always enjoy representing the club in these games especially as I am not good enough to get picked for the A and B teams

Its always an experience playing a different course you can hack it around your own place anytime and there will be many more stablefords to play in.

To my mind, if you put yourself down to play for a team then you play in the match unless unavailable. Personally I would not be happy with team members who only wanted to play the decent courses. At Stoke we have some good venues and some bad venues and I play the ones that I am selected for. One week it may be a lovely course, the next a hack around a 9 holer but I have signed up to be part of a team so I play both.

To me, the decision is simple, if you are available then you play irrespective of the venue. That said, we have a comp every week just about so missing one is no big thing. If your club has less regular comps then it may be a reasonable question as to why it is on the same day as an away match.
