Carry or trolley?

Interesting article but don't want to read into the facts too much as it states only a small number of golfers over 4 rounds.

Definately find life easier on the course with my electric trolley and use it as much as possible. Saying that I have a spell pulling or carrying as my trolley has a slight problem and needs a hammer to it!

I can't afford an electric trolley and I find pulling one a massive inconvenience, especially when you're trapsing round the thick stuff for your ball like I am (alot :D).

So I'm happy with carrying.

Well, I've got an even better study.

I get more cream crackered after a round when I'm carrying, than when I use a trolley.

I can tell you without having any of my bits and bobs wired up, that I score worse by at least a few shots when I carry. There will be a drop in concentration ( normally for me somewhere between the 10th and the 13th ) before I get my second wind for the last few holes.

Having said that, I reckon I must burn up a shed load more calories when I carry - it's a big heavy bag. If I go the the gym ( something I do pretty much daily, honest ) the keen runners often have weights strapped to them because it makes them fitter. It must be the same logic walking 5 miles, or walking 5 miles with a heavy weight strapped to your back.

So conclusive proof. Sort of.

But I could do with £27 grand

Give me £27k

G'won, you know it makes sense.

:)

I will never, ever, in my life, understand the macho thing about carrying.

I have witnessed it time and time again where people would rather carry, on a 30-degree day, and come back knackered and sweating like a pregnant nun, that use a trolley because they think that "real men" dont use trolleys.

I have always carried if I had to due to course conditions but every other time its a trolley all the way.

Why make something harder than it needs to be? Seriously? What does it achieve?

I don't get it either, but like I said, I carry because I find it more convenient than having to wheel a trolley around and not being able to go in certain areas where trolleys are banned.

If it's too hot to carry I'd sooner split the cost of a buggy with my playing partner for the couple of times a year it's going to be applicable.

The big advantage of carrying over electric trolleys is the inconvenience when the trolley breaks down.

Mine broke on the 12th at crowborough beacon and I ended up having to push a bloody heavy trolley with fully laden tour-bag and my god was that hard hard work.

Can't say I've ever encountered the "macho thing" about carrying.

I carry because it is better for my back than pulling a trolley, and as above, it is better and quicker than dragging it all the way round the green etc.

If rain is certain, I will switch to the trolley to save a wet strap/bag pushing against the waterproofs.

I am playing 6 rounds of golf over the next 5 days.
1 today....electric trolley.
1 tomorrow....electric trolley.
1 Friday....electric trolley.
2 Saturday....buggy.
1 Sunday...electric trolley.

Carrying would kill me

I carry on most days when i can estimate the weather. I a spank one into the jungle its a total pain leaving your trolley, finiding your ball then going to get your trolley, and it makes play slower.

I only use my electric trolley if i know rain is in the air and i need to load my bag with my wet gear. although my girlfriend brought it to my attention that

A) im more tiered when i carry a bag after a round
B) on my after game nap i snore louder if i've carried
C) my score tends to drop off around the 13th for 2 or 3 holes before a 2nd wind.

as someone else said a couple of rounds have seen small technical issues with my ellecy trolley losing a few bolts/screws. Trying to play a well know high class course with a trolley held together with a golf tee isnt much fun.

Never seen a pro carry a bag. The logical conclusion to this is that you must play better if you don't carry.

The more interesting question is.... why don't professional caddies use trollies?

I'm pretty sure that with all the health and safety regulations applicable in the UK that caddies, who are required to carry heavy loads for long distances during the course of their employment, would need to carry out all sorts of manual handling risk assessments etc.
Certainly in my industry (construction) the general rule is that if there is a practical and cost effective mechanical aid which you can use to avoid manually lifting anything heavy and then moving it for distances then it gets used. So why not caddies?
H&S law excludes sporting injuries to the likes of boxers and rugby players who are deemed to understand the risks as part of the game.....not sure about caddies though....will we see a compensation claim from a caddy with a bad back and shonky knees beacuse his employer didn't supply him with an electric trolley??

Here's another question for you.
Why is it the better the golfer becomes, the more likely he/she is to carry their bag?
I'm not saying that only good players carry or all those who carry are good players, just an observation :)

Trolley.

I can't carry for long. After a round carrying my bag, my right ankle swells up to gargantuan proportions and I can barely walk.
And all those who moan about pulling a trolley - get a 3 wheel pusher like the PK Twinline 3.

I would guess that is because.....

Good players tend to practice a lot.
Which means ..... going to the course ( or range ) a lot.
Which means.......Either transporting your clubs a lot or storing them in a locker.

Both of which are considerably more practical with a carry bag either kept constantly in the boot of the car, tucked away in the club locker or kept handy to lift easily as you nip out for a quick hit of the ball.

It's to do with frequency of use which leads to game improvement as a by product.

Just my guess.

I would follow this guide below unless exemption on medical grounds.

Age 5-50 years Carry Bag
Age 51-65 years Manual trolley
Age 65 and over Electric trolley

:D

Maybe in a knockabout or a club comp but I've never seen many good players carrying in a big county or open event.

In fact most of them will have somebody who works the on/ off button on their powakaddy and puts the headcovers back on!!! :D

Carry, If its a macho thing to carry a bag, what is it to trolley it? Some footballers wear gloves to keep their little soldiers toasty, some dont mind a bit of cold...personal choice.
I dont see it as macho,Its my choice.
However I do think a fraction of a percentage less of someone who uses one for no medical or actual reason.
I choose to carry for numerous reasons, even down to being able to take my drink out of the bag without having to stop on the fairway to do so,
I can walk across the course without others hearing me and putting them off everytime I encounter a gravel path.
I have nothing needing charged nightly
I dont have to assemble anything from the car
I dont need to worry about how good the warranty service is..
I have nothing electrical to worry about and as my bag has straps, can carry it up and down hills and not look daft trying to drag/push a dead leccy mule.
I dont need to scrub the trolley I dont have after winter rounds.
I can jump streams, only seen one trolley bearer try that before and failed hilariously.
I can cross greens quickly and easily.

Totally agree.....it's quicker for me personally to carry, plus where I normally end up on the course dictates that a trolley ain't going there in a million years! I will, however, use a trolley if rain looks like it's on the agenda.
