As Atticus-Finch (Alan) mentioned in the "meeting up" post, I'm just back from Carnoustie after a round with the man himself.
The Glen outing guys will remember that Alan more than generously put up a 1st prize of a round on the Championship course, where he's a member. My pal, Scott Martin, or "El Bandito" as I call him, romped home with 41 points and so claimed that prize today.
I joined Scott to keep him company and make up a fourball with Atticus and his pal, Brian. This of course had nothing to do with the fact that Carnoustie is my all time favourite course, you understand.
To say that we had a glorious day for golf was an understatement. Check out this weather;-
This is what it's all about!
Here's Scotty in deep doodoo at the 5th hole. Does he care. Not a jot!
We had a laugh on this hole. After a pulled approach shot, Alan, who's my team-mate for the day, finds himself left of the green with an impossible pitch to get close to the flag on a very tricky sloping green.....his ball is out of shot on the left here! For fun I said I'd give him a tenner if he got down in 2. Frankly, the money was safe. He promptly plays a lovely wee pitch........ but the slope takes the ball agonisingly down the hill to 40 feet away. His putt shaves the hole and only just lips out as I was reaching for my money in my pocket! Good craic!
Some great golf played by all in perfect conditions and good banter.
After a good start Alan and I are pegged back from 2 up to level by Scott & Brian on the 15th by which time my game has gone from great over the first 13 (only +5 with four three putts!) to woeful for the rest (double, blob, double, blob, double). But my partner saved the day by getting a brilliant birdie 2 at the long 16th and finished the game off in style on the next after the rest of us had found various different bits of the Barry Burn! Well done, mate. Stylish. And always good to wreak revenge on Scotty!
When I first joined the forum a year and a half ago I put up a post called "Carnoustie-Wow!" basically singing the praises of the course and Alan and I first got into conversation about it online. To team up with him today after meeting a few times since was brilliant and just shows that this is the best forum on the net, with the best and kindest of members. Long may it continue.
Thanks for a great day, Alan. I won't forget it. And if you ever put a drive past the one you hit on the 18th then I'll be demanding random drug testing. Wow! ......Again
