Hotel in striking distance of Carnoustie

8 of us heading from the south coast to Carnoustie in April. Obvs a long drive, we will aim to leave here lunchtime and overnight somewhere north of Carlisle, but needs to be in striking distance for our first day tee time at Carnoustie at lunchtime next day.
Any thoughts or recommendations?

Holiday Inn Express @ Strathclyde country park. Think it’s junc. 5 on the M74. There’s a Toby Carvery just across the car park. Leaves you about 2.5hrs the following morning.
