Careers Within the Golf Industry

I work for a company who specialise in recruitment within the golf industry.

To continue to drive forward as an industry, it is important that we continue to look at people from all walks of like and industries who have a genuine passion for golf and want to help it move forward.

I would be interested to know if anyone has considered a career within golf and what their experience has been so far when exploring job opportunities?

I'd love a career in golf, however, it seems unless it's retail other sectors can't really transfer skills.

I worked at a golf club for a few months, and really didn't enjoy it. I think this was more due to that specific golf club than anything - my job was massively oversold to me, and the organisation was an utter mess. The worst shift was when I was managing the bar one evening and there was a 40th birthday party. Awful, rude 'guests', plenty of which seemed pretty set on having a scrap. I had two staff with me that night - a pregnant lady and a young skinny lad. We nearly had to call the police when it kicked off over the band finishing their set, and the guests wanted them to carry on. I was pretty sure that at one point I was going to get punched, but I think I bored them all into submission in the end.

I also had a guy in his seventies square up to me a few weeks later because our leaf blower thing had broken down, so there were leaves all over the course... Obviously not great for golfers, but I'm not really sure how he thought threatening to hit me would help.

I wouldn't say it has put me off working in golf, but it has definitely made me re-think about working directly with the public, in a setting like that. Alcohol really brings out a nasty side to some people.

Similar, but all the jobs seem to be either highly specialised ( Green keeper, Architect), Stateside (equipment design, marketing, manufacture). Or minimum wage / seasonal (sales, technician, course hand, pga pro...)

Occasionally something comes up from Ping, but every bit of research tells me its not a great place to work?!

Like an assistant who is lucky to get out on the course or a pro who is also confined to the shop.
Do you need a university education to be a green keeper?

Be wary what you read on the Internet, you're only getting one side of the story.

Interesting question and it is something I had seriously considered a few years back. For me, my background is the sales side of the motor trade, and over the last 8 years being in field based roles. I’ve got quite an extensive background including the finance sector and currently manufacturer level.

My limited experience applying for a couple of field based sales roles has not even got me to an interview. I personally feel that recruiters see my C.V and discount my application due to no industry experience. Although, I see the skill sets all being crossover, I can understand why it would be viewed as such.
I do however really enjoy what I’m doing and love the industry that I work within, having now discounted the prospect and happily view golf as a hobby.

Is it true you have to be completely incompetent to become a golf club secretary….or just slightly……

I saw an ad for a development director, but the salary was too low to make it viable. Also the application process was something out of the 1970s.

When I got made redundant in the fashion/apparel industry I had a look at all the golf companies who do clothing, or have marketing functions. Turns out that ‘all’ of the cool jobs are in Carlsbad and they are mainly looking for fitters over here (a bit of a generalisation, I know). The 2 companies I have a vague connection to someone working there both ditched marketing back to their home countries.

Not sure how to see the question mark after your comment.

Top greenkeepers are now very well qualified.
Nowadays the top greenkeeping jobs are the best paid positions at a golf club.
Even at entry level in Scotland they are looking for college trained staff.
There are quite a few Scottish colleges and Universities providing excellent opportunities to learn.

You seem to need a top education for just about any job these days.
Professional dog walker - a degree in psychology.
Pizza delivery man - degree in logistics.
Green keeper - degree in botany.

I remember when I was leaving school, not sure what to do with my life, didn’t want to go to college. Hawkestone park were advertising a greenkeeping apprenticeship. ‘Nah, I’m not doing that, I hate mowing the lawn’! Ended up working in a bank because it’s a steady job, etc etc. I’ve started regretting not going for it recently, would bloody love to be a greenkeeper.

Our old IT manager at my previous job chucked it all in, bought a van and garden tools and seems a lot happier on social media.
