My car tax is due the end of the month but to save putting it on my credit card i was going to wait till next weeks payday which is the thursday which is the 1st march. Just wondering can i leave it that long or will the dvla computers flag it up and send me a fine?

You can use the old one for 5 working days after the end of the month to allow the new one to arrive in the post if applied for online or by phone...

I know this as I forget EVERY year and order it on the LAST day of the month!

Bear in mind that it takes around 5 days to receive the disk through the post after paying online. So if you are waiting until 1st March, you won't have the tax for the first week. If you get stopped by the police or viewed by a roadside camera then you will be fined. The offence is failure to display car tax, it's irrelevant that you've paid for it.

o i thought it was all on computer so thay can see you hav it before they even pull you. Same for MOT i was just given a computer print out the other day instead of the green certificate

The website states you can use the old one for 5 working days after it expires if you have purchased one online or over the phone. After those days you will get fined, not before I am pretty sure.

The best thing to do is browse the website, it has all the info there you will need.

Take a look here http://www.motordefenceteam.co.uk/offence-guide/No-Road-Tax.htm but looking at the end of the page it supports what ScienceBoy has said above.

There may be defences available:

  1. where you were not the keeper of the vehicle; or
  2. where the vehicle was stolen; or
  3. where it was not used on a public road; or
  4. when you are in the "grace period" following the expiry of your road tax.

Be cool, if you are that worried, don't drive it.

I forgot one for 4 months once. The fine was less than the cost. Not recommended though.....

im not worried it was more wondering as if it was a yes i was going to do it on my credit card. As for driving i only use her weekends anyway as got the work van during the week

so does that mean if you get caught driving a vehicle you have stolen with expired tax you wont get the fine/penalty added to your offence?

if so if i ever get the urge to steal a car at least i know i wont need to worry if its tax is valid. Always nice to have one less thing to worry about when pinching a car haha

You can but I think it needs to be ordered before the last day of the month or it doesnt count!
