Car Service Plans

Do you mean a car service plan or a car extended warranty plan.

My last but one nearly new purchase came with the plan included and it included an MOT guarantee.

If the car you bought is nearly new then there would be the remainder of the of the Warranty anyway.

What you are buying a is guarantee of protection against future service price increases.

My latest nearly new purchase came with the MOT guarantee only.
 
A bit like PPI. It keeps you tied to main dealer servicing. As long as OEM parts are used, anyone can service a car and the warranty is still valid.
 
I bought one with my car recently, I thought it was good value especially as it includes AA breakdown cover, only downside was having to pay for it upfront.

I asked what the cost of a 3 year service plan paid by direct debit was and it was almost double the price.
 
I've had service plans with 2 of my cars

One was because they included it, with gap insurance and tyre insurance into one monthly payment so I just took it out with my PCP at time and had low cost motoring

Current one I got a 5 year plan for £600

£120 a service can't say fairer than that

When I asked about a service plan with the car bought last month they only offered monthly DD. They did not say anything about MOT warranty and breakdown cover so it was complete (pleasant) surprise to be sent it by the manufacturer.
 
I always pee off the salespersons when they offer me a 3 year warranty by saying the first year is covered by the goods and services act so can I start my three year warranty cover the year after that.
After they have hummed and hawedd and say no I say that your three year warranty is basically for only two years so no thanks.

The OP is talking about a fixed fee service plan, not warranty. It means your servicing is paid for up front, you just take your car in, get it serviced, drive away, no other payment required.
 
Had one on my Mazda, got one on my wifes Yaris and going to get another one on my van. If it saves you money over the term whats not to like?
Despite what the EU says, argueing with a manufacturer over whos paying for something after a non dealer service is a real pain, and only worth it if you have nothing else in your life to do.

Mines with honda themselves aswell so any dealer in UK can go it's very helpful

The warranty may still be but does the other garage give you roadside assistance? Seat servicing through the main dealer apparently gives you roadside assistance and recovery for the first 15 years of its life. Having benefited from that already I’m happy to take the service package and get that thrown in.
 
When I got.my service plan, the dealer said.that the AA now carry spare wheels so even if I get a puncture there's no need to use the repair kit , just call and they'll come.out and get you home.

PPI has nothing to do with car servicing. In 34 years of selling cars, I've never yet heard of PPI tying you to main dealer servicing. Maybe you could explain????
Anyone can service a car and if it's done properly it will remain in warranty. But it's a false economy. A 3 year old car with full main dealer service history is a much more saleable item than a 3 year old car with a variety of service stamps in the book from non franchised garages. So the few quid you saved by going elsewhere will be lost again at part exchange time. And if it's a "quality" marque, like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Mini and maybe VW, the dealer wouldn't even entertain putting it on their forecourt, so the loss could be even greater.
A service plan is a great idea of budgeting. A bit like Gas and Electric bills. Would you rather have one every quarter and have to find a few hundred pounds in one hit to pay it, or would you rather pay by DD. I know what I'd rather do.
Most of them will save you money over the term, and it's a hedge against inflation.

My thinking has always been I have the cash now so I'll just spend it on the service plan and then j don't have to think oh it's service time

This 5 year one I plan to sell the car in the summer with 2 services left that I can transfer as part the deal..
 
Is the service plan from the manufacturer or dealer?
Anytime i have been offered a dealer plan it has been pretty expensive.
I bought a manufacturer one for my current car (Fiesta ST). £400 for 3 services. Good deal given that I can go anywhere and the first (smallest) service would have been ~£200.
 
If its just routine servicing then Smiffy is spot on, the savings made by local servicing can be wiped out by the drop in 'perceived quality' of service at px or sale time.
Its when it comes to things like brake servicing that I draw the line.

Example, BMW wanted £410 to replace the back discs and pads on the wife's X4. We also discovered a caliper issue on the rear near side which they wanted an additional £250 for.
I got better quality Brembo discs and pads for £190 and a brand new TRW caliper (and guess who the "BMW" caliper is made by?) for £150. Fitted and service interval reset within an hour doing it myself.
So £660 job done for £340 with better quality parts and only an hour lost of not having use of the car versus the whole day that BMW needed it for.
