I'm looking for a bit of advice from car people of the forum.
At present, we're a one car family, but the wife is at me to get her a "wee runaround" for taking the kids to their clubs etc when I'm at work. I first considered getting her a banger for a grand or so, but I'm now considering a car lease deal to negate maintenance/MOT costs etc.
Can someone advise about the pros and cons of car leasing please?
And if there's any good deals around? I was looking at a wee peugoet 207 or something around that size.

Smiffy, I'm looking at you.

I work for a leasing company and although we do very little in the way of car leasing and alot more of things like scientific equipment or industrial equipment the number one thing that confuses people in our business is that people think that after they have made there final lease payment that they own the equipment. They dont, we do...

I am thinking you are looking for something where you change the car every few years or every year or have an option to keep it after the 1st year and make payments on that.

I would ask you to be very careful with all the paperwork and make sure you read every word. The salesman will not lie to you about title but he will not tell you about it either. If you ask him he may tell you "oh title will be a nominal fee".. I advice you ask for clarification on this.

Thanks for the reply Alex,,
I'm aware that I don't own the car when making payments and that I may be offered to buy it outright after my lease is up.
I'm looking basically to pay a couple of hundred quid a month for 3 years and then hand the car back. I know it's a bit of a false economy, but I like the idea of not having to worry about garage bills as a warranty and servicing is offered in these deals too.

Someone i work with just got a 207 on a deal from Peugeot very very cheaplymy be worth looking at their website.

I'll e mail her and ask what the deal was called.

It's called "just add fuel" On website a 207 is £179 a month and includes everything bar fuel.

Not so false really, Buy appreciating assets, lease depreciating assets.

Good luck with it

£2100 a year isn't what I'd call cheap

My wifes car and my car added together don't cost that a year to run

Annual depreciation must be around that mark though Strangely?

I guess it depends on how much you want a new car.

....and peace of mind.

In terms of reliability you mean? I guess so. Maybe we've been lucky but in the last six years we've only needed a battery for each car and the crank angle sensor went on mine last year. Currently mines is off the road waiting me fitting a new coil pack, will get it done at the weekend :)

leasing is absolutely the way to go for a car, I bought a £30k car years ago and when selling 3 years later best I could get was £14k and it was a low mileage mint car, if I'd leased for £5000 PA I would have had hassle and worry free motoring and the same value after 3 years.

I'm in that situation right now so will be interested in any good lease deals around

I agree with SB. At some point during every year, I work out how much it's cost to run our cars.
Last year our 3 series cost about £900 in depreciation, £55 MOT and £176 service. Our Mitsubishi cost as good as nothing, £55 MOT and £50 on oil and filters.

We've not had a break down in 9 years with 3 cars on the go.

£200 p/m over 36 months = £7200. Not my idea of value.

I say this, not to persuade you otherwise, only to say it can be done. I bought a low mileage, mint, 6 year old Corolla with/for a mate for £3250. If my missus wasn't poshing it up in a Beemer, I'd do the same.
