Got a BMW 1-series as our run around car. Coming up to its 4 year and has done 35K miles. its off warrenty now.... and lo & behold it is starting to fall apart at a remarkable rate
.. A few weeks ago, i can feel the aircon was not working. When i start the car, it blows cold air.. however after about 10 mins, its pumping out hot air!!!
... The dipper light has now blown
... now a warning light has come on to say .. Replace brake pads ... Took it to for a poke at the local (non-BMW) garage and they said that the pads look ok and they cant find why the light has come on
... This morning found the rear windscreen wiper is ripped..

... WTF, how does all this happen after the warrenty run out... I also realised that it is easier for me to hand it over as part of the PCP and get a new one rather than try and fix this...
... bloody irritating...

Not quite sure what you mean by the dipper light has blown, is it just a new bulb required? And the brake pad issue could be as simple as new pads required (not unreasonable after 4 years) as the pads have sensors built in these days. Rear wiper blade, again a simple fix.
The only issue really is the aircon and it may just require a re-gas.

Or just get a new car like Jacko suggests.. cost of all the above + replacing the nearly worn out run flats at the back would easily be £500+. This can go towards the deposit for a new shiney wheels.
On that subject .. Saw the new A-class.. it seems to have undergone a full revamp and the cockpit is next generation... very tempted

How much? I reckon you could get tyres AND brake pads for 500 notes!

Have you also seen the new Audi A1? (y)

Indeed.. it was not a car I ever thought I would look at.. but they have changed it beyond my imagination.. also some cracking deal. £269 per month with £269 deposit .. what’s not to like (except maybe how it behaves on the motorway when a huge truck races past it)

Blimey, how fast or slow do you drive on a motorway!

My colleague was driving the new A1 1.4 , he was having a bit of fun with a Porsche Macan GTS. He got in front of it at a roundabout on a dual carrigeway and the Porsche couldn't catch him. Obviously top speed the A1 wouldn't have stood a chance but it was good fun to watch. I was following in a Mercedes C class, in comfort mode!

Good to know as I was thinking about the 1.4 engine rather than the 1L one. I was worried that the car might be too little and would get blown away by a speeding truck 😜

Yet to take it for a spin.

Flippin heads spinning, got a Mazda CX-7 it's gorgeous, had it from 3 months old. Done 90 K now. It's a lovely runner and owes is nowt. But there's shiny cars out there that keep winking at me. The CX-5 being one of them but the flippin diesel, leccy, hydrogen car scenario is helping to spin me head even more.

The diesel scenario is only applicable if you want to keep the car. If it’s on PCP then you hand it in and walk.

IMO, leccy is still not viable (at least not for me)

Muddy ave never bought a car on PCP yet and always end up keeping them. Ave had the Mazda 8 years the seat 5 and there both running strong. Think it may well be another diesel one day. 👍

Go for the CX-5 Diesel, then get it remapped!
The 147bhp models can get remapped to 210bhp. What's not to want?

Or wait for the Sky-active X engine to be rolled out (compression ignition petrol:eek:)
If it works or as good as the pre release blurb says, it could be the way forward.
As far as BMW’s go, my eldest daughter, her husband and my youngest daughters boyfriend all have new or nearly new BM’s, and all have had issues ranging from new engine needed, one a new car being exchanged because of the number of faults down to electrical issues. I would say they don’t seem what they were.

Was struggling to get if this is serious or not, still unsure TBH.

What you describe is hardly "falling apart at an alarming rate" but actually pretty fair wear and tear. And, shock horror, none of the above would be covered under warranty. 4 years and 35k miles and I will bet you haven't had the pads changed previously or the aircon recharged. As you are meant to replace wiper blades every year or so, I would at least expect you have done that.

And on the "I know people who have had issues so they must be crap", personally have the 335d, wife has the 30d X4, FIL has 420d and MIL has 218d, all coming up 2 years old and not a days issue with them.

Hate mine though but that's because its dated and ugly as sin. Build quality is excellent. Wipers replaced at 12 months as needed. Pads will need done in a few months but even then its £100 for a set of pads and 40 minutes to change them.

Or on the flip side you can have an X3 like my neighbour's wife which BMW refunded in full 3 days before going to court which was less than 8 months old and had 907 miles on it it was in and out of the dealership that often!

People have different opinions and expectations in life. One person's good experience doesn't make it unacceptable or wrong for someone else to have a different opinion/expectation.

B service due on my Merc. 35k miles, so gear box oil needs changing, and axle oil too. B service is the big service.

Luckily I have one service left, pre paid by the previois owner.

I booked it in yesterday, and was quoted £1600 + VAT and parts. Holy cow. That is a lot of money.

There are always good and bad experiences. I've had 2 beemers, no issues with either. I've had 2 Audis which between them have had over £12k in repair bills, fortunately all covered by warranty.

Exactly the point I was making... but in reverse.

If German manufacturers were as good as they would like us to believe they are... Why haven't they joined the likes of Toyota, Hyundai and others in selling their product with extended warranties...
