Can you be a good putter and but not hole many putts?

Worth double checking your expectation levels Sam

Jordan Spieth holes 1 in 8 20 footers. Keegan Bradley 1 in 50!!!! I expect youre somewhere in between ;) Tour average looks to be about 1 in 12 or so

Fundy I agree with your above post to me that line and pace need to be right for them to go in. But what I should have said was in the longer putts. I know I would always try to hole any putt but from 20 I don't want it rocketing past 8ft either in which case I said that the pace to me is more important.

I too think it's all about pace. Reading putts is relatively simple most of the time but if you can't consistently hit the ball at two feet past the hole pace from 15/20 feet then you won't hole many no matter how well you read it. If you routinely leave some 2 feet short and some 4 feet past and all lengths in between then even slight slopes will kill you.......but you won't 3 putt very often so may think statistically you are doing fine when in reality most putts don't have a chance. I'm not saying line isn't important but if you can't control the pace accurately you will struggle anywhere outside 10 feet and you will 3 putt from distance a lot more too. Good putters hole putts, period.

To be fair i think its highlighted by the fact i hit so many greens in reg and give myself a lot of 20ft putts. whereas some other people will often have 6ft putts as they have chipped to there.

I think this is why putts per rounds needs some context. I don't hit many GIR, about 20%, so expect 3 putts to be quite rare if I am chipping from, say, within 10 yards of the green. I would expect my 3 putts to go up, at least temporarily, if I improve my GIR, as my first putt will often be much further away.

a look at my stats on HDID sees my putting as absolutely atrocious, it has me down at 40 ,yep 40 putts per round average.
i play off 14 and cant remember the last time i shot over 90 on my course ,and i regularly shoot high 70`s in knockouts and bounce games .
i do embelish my scores on HDID so that is where my stats come from .
if i could putt i would be single figures easily according to my stats .but i cant so im not.

I know the feeling, off 14 too and averaging 38/40 putts

Absolutely soul destroying at times

Interesting question, especially in light of my round last night. I hit 10 good putts from 10-20ft that threatened the hole, and knocked in a couple from 6ft. I also missed 3 putts from 3 feet. Those aside, I felt like I had putted well but just hadn't had any drop. Got home, counted up my putts and found I'd had 37. Not a good number and I felt like I'd putted better than that. I guess those 3 short ones make the picture bleaker.

So I hit a lot of good putts that didn't drop. But the three missed short ones suggest I'm not a great putter. Better from 10ft than I am from 3ft.

My putting average has gone up to 32 from 26, but I'm hitting more greens in regulation. Scores are pretty much the same. I'm happy with it, although I'd be happier converting more putts.

Do I practice? Not a huge amount, mostly before rounds but if I feel that its going off the boil I'll do a few lengthy sessions on the practice green.

I now currently do but I've found switching from a milled face to an insert has had a huge impact on distance control, before it was either 10 foot past or short

Keep practising. 10 feet is an awful long miss in putting unless you are miles into 3 putt country.

I'm a bad putter in that im very defensive and a bit of a dribbler. For the amount of greens I hit, I do not hole very many birdie putts at all. Last Sunday my stats say I putter quite well (32 putts) BUT, I missed 5 putts from inside 10 feet for birdie, a couple of which were 5ft.

Based on this......I would say to the OP that to be a good putter you must hole putts.

Funny thing is it was I was very rarely 1 putting it was always 2 with the occasional 3 putt per round

I just couldn't get to grips with distance control

New putter 2 rounds in and both have been 36 putts however more single putts so there is improvement that and lining my ball up properly again has helped
