Can someone answer this one.

What is he to do, take it out if the ball is running a bit too fast at the hole with a good chance it will hop over it when you could be saved by it hitting the pin.

If he is attending the pin HE HAS TO LIFT IT regardless of any ball speed.

If he leaves it in and the ball strikes the pin and rebounds he is in doda.

Sorry i didnt clarify it in the OP chaps but the balls are actually on the green not off it so that should tidy up the off the green argument.

As far as I'm aware, you can ask for the pin to be attended wherever you are on the course. In fact, you don't even have to ask sometimes as someone standing close to the pin can be "deemed" to be tending.

After a few incidences lately of chipping on to the green and the ball hitting the pin and bouncing off by some distance, I'll usually ask for it to be attended while I'm coming on from off the green.

soz Bobmac i was always told that the flag was in or out when off the green!! My god i should read the rule book myself!! All this time i thought different!! Thanks for the that!!

No problems.
One thing I have learned about the rules is NEVER take someone elses word as gospel.
If your not sure, keep quiet and look it up in the book.

Its not as easy to read a putt (from 40 feet) when the ball is travelling towards you as opposed to jumping behind the guy who has just putted, and the ball is going away from you. Your height would not allow you to see the small changes of movement, yes you would see that it went one way or the other but not the subtle changes as standing behind a player.
