Can men's pro golf reconcile & what might it look like?

This is a bit of a surprise.

When the PGAT signed the deal with the SSG a portion of the money invested was supposed to go to past legends who helped create the tours legacy (the tour are big in that, right?)

Looks like Tony Jacklin missed out - harsh but I guess a few people won’t see him as a significant building block in the tour, but what does surprise me is Faldo not getting on the money list.. He was part of the absconding of great European Tour players that made the PGAT what it is today…

Jay Moneyhands eh…. ;-)

In the absence of a pre-existing contract, I wouldn’t expect to randomly be given extra money years or even many decades after I’d stopped working (or contracting) somewhere. Whatever success my work brought to the employer/contractor, I was paid for it at an agreed rate at the time. Seems a bit bizarre that anyone would. I genuinely don’t understand why these payments are even a thing.

I suspect they’re to keep people associated with the PGAT sweet.

If they actually were for recognising players that had built the tour up - Faldo would be deserving of part of the pot.

Faldo didn’t really start playing regularly on the PGAT until 95/96

Jacklin was in and out of the PGAT as well

So you can see why they wouldn’t be part of any PGAT legends etc

PGA Tour with some hefty losses in 2024, although that is in part down to funding being redirected into PGA Tour Enterprises.

Bit of an ambiguous tweet considering even a quick google tells you their 2024 financial accounts are not yet finalised and that tweet doesn’t show any actual final loss figures!

The revenue figure is also hugely questionable considering 2023 revenue total was $1.828 billion so either someone is being creative with their numbers or they’re not quoting actual year end figure because there is no way the revenue is down that much in a year where they’ve seen record prize funds. Plus as a not for profit organisation you would never expect to see them make profits only break even or minor losses.

So they don’t actually have “hefty losses” and it’s very much click bait with a juicy headline

Well if your tax return shows less coming in, than going out - it's a loss. As I said in my post above, that's partly down to the restructuring of the tour. None of us have seen the return I'm guessing, so we really don't know the complexities of it.

I'd imagine the figures for PGATE look really strong, given the money that was pumped in by the SSG.

But as said it doesn’t give anywhere near a true reflection and people have just leapt upon the headline

19m for Jay Monahan in 2024.
His contract runs till end of 2026.
So reasonable to assume by the time he leaves he will take in excess of $80 million for the total mishandling of the PGAT/LIV saga since 2022.
Now commissioner in name only as they brought in Brian Rolapp to run the show because he has been so bad.

Good riddance to him when his contract finally finishes !

Why was it “mishandled”.

Surely his remit was to look after the PGAT and another was looking to come into the US and play tour events

Did people really expect him to bow to the demands of Greg Norman ?

LIV was the disrupter , Monahan was always going to do what he thought was best for the tour he ran not what LIV wanted

Ok what was it he should have done that would have protected the PGAT ? Allowed them to jump across to LIV and then come back when they want ? And pick and choose which events they played on
Liv may never have even existed had he done his job properly.
Didnt take the call from the Saudi's or even tell the members of the approach.
The first intention of the PIF was to invest in the PGAT.

Only then did they turn their attention to forming their own tour.
I could go on and on of all the mistakes after that the guy made but whats the point 🤷‍♀️

Greg was always going to create the Tour

LIV was going to be started at some point

Honestly thats not true.

Greg only got his chance when Monahan refused to speak with the Saudi's about investing in the PGA Tour.

From No Laying Up (Massively Pro PGA Tour)
"To be fair to Monahan, he was dealt a difficult hand two years ago when the Saudis showed up on the scene and started handing out money to economically-anxious golfers, but that doesn’t mean he’s handled any of this well. In poker terms, it was like he folded 15 hands in a row, then went all in with ace high, even though it was obvious he’d be called. I talked to a Tour player at Riviera this year who was still pissed that Monahan never even took a phone call from the Saudis when this whole thing started. And when the PGA Tour recruited the 9/11 families to be part of their PR campaign, then turned around had Monahan smiling next to Yasir Al-Rumayan on CNBC, it felt like one of the most hypocritical moves in the history of sports. At a time when the PGA Tour desperately needed a galvanizing leader, he has managed to make every public appearance feel like he’s on an earnings call with analysts and shareholders, trying to put a good spin on another tepid quarterly report.

“There are always things when you look back that you would do differently,” Monahan said Tuesday. “Obviously when you look back to last summer I could have handled that better, and I've taken full responsibility and accountability for that. That's on me"
