Hi all,
Being a 27 handicap but with good ball striking do you think i could handle these clubs: Mizuno MP57
Mizuno MP52
Taylormade TP
wilson ci9
Nike VR full cavity
Cleveland CG7 tours

It will take me a long time to save but i really need a target. I also need to know how much i need!
Thanks

Get down to your local pro shop once you have 150-200 saved and try out the second hand club sets, I'll bet you are surprised what that sort of money will get you that will be beneficial to your game.
Failing that, invest in new wedges, one club at a time so you dont have to wait so long.

(btw, you only need to ask the question once ;) )

How do you know you're a good ball striker?

27 handicap would suggest otherwise.

If you're ball striking is good why are you not off a much lower handicap.

Not a criticism, just interested.

Good ball striker - 27 ??

I take it you mean that you consistently hit the ball full distance but not necessarily in the right direction? Your chipping, putting must need some work then so perhaps don't bother too much about the irons?

Personally I'd still go for game improvement irons and get all the help you can if I were you, but ultimately it's down to trying them and being happy with any that you pick.

Basically the only thing holding me back is my short game. If i could putt i would be alot lower. In 9 holes i had three 3-putts and the rest 2 putts. I really struggle with my short game. I can hit the ball well usually straight it is short game that is stopping my handicap going down!

That's 3 shots, call it 6 over 18 holes, where do the other 21 dropped shots come from?? :D

Duffed chips by the sound of it

21 duffed chips!!

Declare any ball that misses the green as unplayable and return to the point where you last hit a shot and use your stellar ball striking to hit the surface 2nd time round!! :D

TBH that is exactly right. I will go to make a chip from 20 yards out and leave it short. It loses all power and stops. Do you have any cures or tips for this????

Chipping is an artform that takes much practice to get good at as there is quite a lot of feel as well as good technique.

Basics for me would be use as least lofted a club as you can to get the ball to the green i.e. if you can chip with 7 iron that's better than 8 iron type of thing. Sometimes however people like to use one club for chipping. You want to get the ball running on green as soon as possible and as little flying as possible. More loft means you have to hit harder which isn't good as you lose control. This is determined by how far from the green you are of course.

Weight on left side, feet close and slight open stance. Choke down on club. Hands must stay ahead of the ball through the shot and you need a crisp downward strike, never quit on it and decelerate - fatal. It's a bit like putting in that you rock shoulders, you don't want to get at all wristy-handsy with it and you dont want to scoop or flick at it in any way.

Thanks for that birdieman. Will try at the end of next week as i am snowboarding in austria until saturday. Will be playing on sunday so will let you know if i am better then.

Snowboarding in the sun - nice work if you can get it. Are you as good as the Red Zeppelin, what's his name again?? :D
