I understand some people sometimes post comments on threads that break the rules and they are quite rightly given infractions but.........
Why is the whole thread often removed?
Is it not possible to just remove the offending posts then just lock the thread ?

It depends on what has been happening Bob but remember there isn't that many threads that get pulled or locked just that when it does happen it usually creates three or four that complain about the fact that it happened.

I understand that but it's such a shame that pages of posts that can be very entertaining are wiped because of the actions of one person.

Agreed. Although it normally does get discussed between the mods in a private section of the forum but sometimes a decision (right or wrong) has to be made.

Sometimes there is also a concern that the thread will resume going bad with new posts of a similarly unfortunate nature.

Also, there can be a lot of these. Not even counting posts which were identified by Mods, on Sunday there were 22 reported posts, all of which had to be looked at and considered, some of which had to be edited or archived, some of which were extensively discussed between the Mods, and some of which resulted in several rounds of correspondence with the members who posted them. This stuff can take a lot of time.

22 reported posts? seriously?!

I cant get over that, do people just sit and read posts for something mildly offensive, close to the mark etc, just to report it? Are they wannabe PCSO's but failed at that?

I am interested to know as to is it the usual suspects reporting posts? i have never reported a post in my life and am unlikely to in all honesty. However i am stunned as to how many were/are reported!

Do people need to get out more? are the reporters the ones that write to the BBC to complain about Russel Brand when they didn't actually listed to the show?

Some days are just like that. Maybe it was the cold weather and more time spent at the computer. Some reports are acted upon, others aren't, but all are considered and discussed and take up time.

but all are considered and discussed and take up time.

Exactly my point! what a waste of your UNPAID time... and people give you guys a hard time? lucky you don't have me as a mod, i own a Ban-Hammer and would not be afraid to use it!

Carry on! ;)

I understand that which is why I suggested that the thread be simply locked, not removed altogether.

To be honest there are a few members that once given an infraction, now report EVERYTHING they see. As Ethan said 22 reported posts on Sunday all of which once reported creates an automatic discussion thread in the moderator area and sends an instant email to every moderator & all GM staff, plus then we get the PMs off individuals to get something sorted, plus the topics that we know are going to cause problems and 9 out of 10 times do.

Thankfully the majority of the members that have received any infraction, know they made a booboo and take it well and most even apologise. Its just the small few that literally become John Rambo lol.

The problem with just moving the offending posts, is that some threads need so much tidying that the rest of the thread doesn't make sense once they have been removed.
