Our Competition today was a medal. The score card quoted medal and it was a medal in our Club book.

When we came to fill in the scores on the computer the input showed a Stableford.

Whilst some may think it is irrelevant it is not for me because the best 8 medal scores may qualify for our ‘Masters’.

In my case I had 8 scores in the worst being nett 82. Today I had a nett 70 which is highly significant as it will reduce my total by 12

Should be a medal as advertised. I assume everyone played it as such and that was the intention of the Committee when announcing the competition.

In the same way that a qualifier can't be changed into a non-qualifier, I would say a medal can't be changed into a stableford.

Really? Two years ago a comp I was playing in got changed to a non qualifier on the morning of the comp due to the hollow tining adversely affecting the greens.
I remember it well because I got a hole in one that day and would have won a watch if they hadn't have changed it.

Yes, the competition could be abandoned if the course was deemed unfit by the committee or the CSS could rise to reduction only but not made a non qualifier.

"In exceptional circumstances only, or with the authority of the Union, the committee in charge of a competition may declare it a Non Qualifying Competition before play commences and must so advise competitors before they commence play."

Well regrettably I have been advised the Competition will remain as a Stableford. We were out for 4.5 hours which would not have been the case in a Medal.

People have a different strategy in a Stableford, far more aggressive and it is disappointing.

Cheers RF.

Incidentally there is a guy at our Club who is a County referee and is an Executive with The County. I have dropped him a line

I'm not sure why this is being taken as a handicapping matter similar to making a qualifier a non-qualifier. Since any handicap changes from the competition are going to be on the basis of a stableford adjustment anyway, it does not materially alter anything handicapping-wise. Since it is entirely up to the club to determine whether a competition is medal or stableford in the first place, it is equally up to the club if it wants to a change a competition that was in the calendar as medal into a stableford. That's not to condone doing so in such a last minute way but it seems to me to be entirely a club matter.

I don't believe it is. If you check the first post, the OP was more concerned about his performance in this 'medal' round not being counted for qualification for the club's 'Masters' comp.

But certainly, from a handicapping pov, all rounds are (currently) stableford style.

How will it reduce your total by 12? (Unless all your other qualifying scores are also 70s)

I take it that there was no prior annoouncement of the change to the format - you only learned about it when you put your score in the computer?

[h=2]33-1/1[/h] [h=4]Altering Conditions After Competition Starts[/h]Q.A condition of a stroke-play competition provided that scores must be returned by 7:30 pm. At 5:00 pm, a member of the Committee extended the deadline to accommodate four late-arriving competitors. Is such action proper?

A.No. Once a competition has started, the conditions should be altered only in very exceptional circumstances. In this case, no such circumstances existed.

IMO, the last sentence applies here.
