This is a continuation of a thread I have in The Lounge so apologies for double posting but I'm totally confused about what to do.

Short story is that I had a CF session and ending up creaming every shot with Callaway X-Forged which are aimed at single HC'ers. Everything from the range demo and computer said buy them, better than all of the more forgiving models I tried. But a voice in my head is telling me I'm crazy to buy such an advanced club, even though I seemed to be able to use them aaarrrrrgggghh !

Last year I bought myself a set of GI clubs with the idea of starting again after 15 years away.

After a few 9 hole half rounds I was hitting mid 50s, and thinking I'd only play for fun - I'd never get a handicap again.

But then the clubs were nicked and I gave up for good.

This season I got the urge again, and unbelievably I was lent a set of Titleist 962s - clubs for a player who was far better than I'd been even in my 'prime' in the mid 90s.

But I set my sights on improving my game to be worthy of the clubs.

I'm not there yet, but I believe I'm a darn site better than I would be if I'd just got a few cheap clubs from JJB or sports direct.

If you like the feel of them, and you put the effort in, you'll drop your handicap, no problem.

Don't restrict yourself with what you think you ought to be able to achieve. Go for gold.

If the clubs are aimed at single figure players, become a single figure player.

Simples ;)

There's nothing wrong with a 17hcp playing with Callaway x-forged irons, they have a modicum of forgiveness. What shafts did you hit best?

Project X 5.0 shaft, which is regular I flex I think.

Think I've just found them on offer for £380 so it's potentially a less expensive mistake !

I'm going for it, thanks for the words of encouragment craphacker, you're hereby appointed my personal life coach ;)

I play with a junior (17 or 18 years old) who is fully grown and has a very good swing. His handicap is 7 or so i.i.r.c.
he plays with a C/F set of X-forged with stiff rifles.
I have to say, when on form, he hits them far better than when he had some G.I. Taylor Mades.
They are on the MPF chart rated as 650-odd, so they are hardly the least forgiving clubs ever made. I tend to play with clubs that (somewhat coincidentaly) have come out between 650 and 750 on the MPF.
So? Yes.....I don't see the problem. MacGregor 565 were MPF 670 and you are looking at something almost as easy to use.
Why not. They are no different than most of the "better-player" Mizuno irons.

I think they are a gamble of your handicap but then I'm always a conservative sort of guy. Only you know how you hit them and so if they feel good go for it. They should retain a certain P/X value if they don't work out. I hope they help and you may not be a mid-handicapper for long

If you've got doubts, don't buy them.

But why would you have doubts ?

Do you like the look of them ?

Do you like the feel of them ?

Do you like the look of the shot shape ?

Anything goes wrong after that is down to you.

Accept that and don't start blaming the clubs for any mishits and you'll be fine.

At 17HC you've got a swing that works reasonably well, but you WILL make mishits. If you want oversize, game improver, unfeeling clubs that minimise your errors, but minimise your enjoyment, then go for them. But you will be a damn good 17 HC, and at best will get down to 15 or so.

Take up the challenge and be the best you can. I often agree with Homer, but even he will admit that he's the cautious type sometimes.

If I can get to join a club next year, my target is a HC of 12. It'll be hard work, coz my comfort zone is 16-18, and my all time best is 13, from when I was a lot younger and more supple than I am now.

I'll race you to it ;)

Buy em!

You know when you find the right set for you, and it sounds like you know you have found the right set! Its your swing that makes the ball go in different directions, not the club. If you are able to hit X-forged without the bones in your arms shaking, then you are a decent ball striker....17hcp is irrelevant.

Look at it this way, they are an investment and they will last you well into low single figures.

can't really comment on the OP but instinct says if they feel right . . .

Dave, what's the MPF chart?
As you're aware I have the 565's but always knew they were aimed at a better golfer then me. But I'm keeping them as I'm more likely to improve and will 'grow' into them.

Re: Callaway X-Forged for 17 HC ?

Find a set on Ebay, try them, if you dont get on, sell them and get your money back.

*simples*

Early last year, I got a set of Ping S59's, decided that they werent for me, so sold them 3wks later for the loss of the postage costs only :)
In hindsight, trying new clubs in March after hardly playing mid-winter wasnt the best idea.

Ebay wasn't really an option as I had them custome fitted. ANyway, clubs are ordered and the old ones have been sold so no turning back. Look forward to either a glowing review or some cheap forged irons in the for sale sections :)

Re: Callaway X-Forged for 17 HC ?

It's the Maltby Playability Factor, gives a rating based on forgiveness etc

http://www.ralphmaltby.com/

I had a go at that find a shaft tool - doesn't quite work for me.

first question is 'what do you use from 150' then equates that answer with a driver swing speed.

my answer 7-iron or (lately) an 8. my swing speed is nowhere near 105, last time it was measured it was less than 94.

consequently all the shafts it recommends are stiff. now I'm fairly sure I could use stiffer shafts than those I have in the irons (how much would it cost to reshaft to 5.5 Rifles?) but not so sure about stiff in the woods.
