Callaway fitting and filming

Well, just got home from a fabulous day at Wentworth.
Huge thanks to Cameron and the crew from Callaway and of vourse GM for the opportunity.
Got there embarrassingly early, as did a few others, 4 from the Forum and 4 who won via Twitter, although a couole of them are on here as well.
Good bunch of Guys, we had a good old chinwag until everyone arrived.
A few sarnies and then we got our Goody Bags containing a shirt, cap, glove, windproof ja ket, tees and a dozen balls - excellent!
And then off to the range - not the Wentworth range but a Private grass range about a mile away on the Estate. There we had a range of clu s to warm up with - Apex irons as well as hybrids, fairways and drivers. Cameron was taking a few pics and we oughed tbrough the balls while the Trackman charged up.
One by one we got fitted and then weng over to get filmed for the adverts.
The fitting was fairly quick but quite thorough, I ended up with a Big Bertha 10.5 degree with the stovk Fubuki stiff shaft and number 3draw on the sliding weight system. Matt started me on a 13.5 reg as my driving was so poor (my words) and I hit it ok, just very high. So we came down the lofts and finished with the 10.5 stiff which I was carrying 245 yards relatively straight - that'll do me!

Over to the filming.
1 shot from behind, 1 from each 45 degree angle, then one from the side - we had to hold the finish pose for 5 seconds to give time for the on screen info to be added. Thoroughly enjoyable and a great laugh.

Then, Mighty Joe Miller hit the ball further than I've ever seen anyone hit a ball. Phenomenal swing speed, around 145mph was sending the ball out of sight. A very down to earth guy who chatted through everythinv he was doing and why.

Brilliant, brilliant day...

The driver should come fairly soon as well as the Trackman data....

Can't wait...
Love reading the right ups. Thanks. If I had a day out my right ups would be to long.

245 carry, pretty poor tbh, I think it should only be open to proper forumers who tonk it a mile ;)

I hope you let him know the forum average with a 3/4 swing is 300+

great write up, would love to see some of them long drive chaps, I bet its insane watching them in the flesh. I am actually looking forward to the adverts

Love you Guys!!

Not 3D or even 4D but Slo-Mo, black and white, soft-focus so plenty of time and atmosphere to look mean and moody

Great write up. I've always been a big fan of Callaway woods since first hitting a Steelhead 4 wood over a decade ago and creaming it first time. Not used any other make since.

Interesting that "lofting up" didn't help you. How much carry did you gain in the end?

I guess lofting up only works if the CoG is in the right place, like on the SLDR...didn't get on with the Alpha so didn't mess with changing the CoG..
Initial carry with the 13.5 reg was just over 200 yards. We started from scratch as I said so I didn't hit my driver as a marker. Final carry with the 10.5 stiff came in at 245, a definite improvement on what I've been getting with my driver and a significant difference from the 3 wood.
If I can recreate it on the course I'll be a happy bunny!

This is my story...

I arrived early, although not as early as the other 'keenos'! Got handed a goody bag and told to choose a hat and then given my shirt. Met the other lads and had a light lunch in the Ryder Cup room. We headed down to the private range where we were told to warm up with the various Callaway clubs so i promptly necked a couple of 6 irons, then hit the X2Hot hybrids and Big Bertha fairways and finally the BB drivers. I did notice the additional shafts in the bags too, I was eyeing up a nice graphite design AD Di shaft.

Joe Miller arrived and my group went to watch him first, he was casually hitting balls about halfway down the range then announced it was a wedge! Then moved to his 7 iron, then his 1 iron and finally his plethora of drivers. As Ian said, he's a nice guy and encouraged us to ask questions, gave us a load of stats too, from what I remember -

Longest comp drive - 474
Swing Speed 150 ish
Ball speed - 222 ish

He was consistently hitting balls over the trees at the back of the range and into the garden of the house behind, then nailed a few putters too. He talked us through his drivers, all X2Hot Ld heads, from what i remember he had a standard length one with a custom made fujikura x flex shaft, another with an xx flex house of forged shaft and another with a xx house of forged tipped 3/4" because he "likes a little bit of feel in it"

He suggested we have a go, i think i used the standard length driver, hit a couple of half decent shots which i was pleased with. He also gave us a few pointers on driver set up which helped.

Then I went over to Matt for the fitting, he asked about my current driver, shaft specs, how i hit it etc - I explained that i have an Accra stiff tip shaft in my i20, but due to many swing flaws - mostly my flippy hands - the ball flight is very high.
He grabbed a BB alpha and put the AD Di shaft in, i hit about 6/7 balls with it and whilst it felt nice the shots were terrible, very slicey and inconsistent, he fiddled with the head and put an aldila tour green shaft in and handed it back to me, i hit another 5 balls, all with about a 3 yard fade to the same spot - he showed me the trackman dispersion pics to confirm. Fitting done - BB alpha, neutral face, 8* (#loftup) aldila tour green shaft. I will add that i hit one shot with the AD Di shaft - a horrible cutty, toey chop that had an impressive 4300rpm of spin on!

Next was the filming. As Ian said, filmed from every angle possible but it went very smoothly. Had some pics taken with Joe and that was that. Cameron said he will confirm driver specs and wording for the filming and then the clubs will be sent.

This was my first forum opportunity and i'm very grateful for it, it was a very surreal experience. Thank you to GM and Cameron for an amazing day.

Hope that wasn't too painful a read.

Not much more for me to add to what's been mentioned already, but I will definitely send a massive thanks to Cameron, Sue, Joe and the rest of the Callaway team, the two Sky Sports guys who were starting to look thorough bored by the end of the day, I don't blame them, can't be much fun watching a bunch of hackers swinging clubs all day, and also to the guys at GM for giving us the opportunity.

Mark fitted me up for a 9 degree BB with stock stiff shaft. After hitting the regular shaft he almost immediately whipped it away from me and gave me the stiff shaft which was a lot more controllable and my fade was dramatically decreased once he close up the face and lifted the toe of the driver up a bit. Job well done sir.

Seeing Joe again was incredible, I'd seen him at Golf Live but being up close to him was incredible, the sheer force he puts behind the ball is freighting and the sound off the face of the X2 Hot driver was deafening. Such a down to earth and nice bloke as well, he swiped my hat for his Sky Sports shoot and then signed it for me as well as taking a picture. I'm convinced that the house out the back of the private range has probably got a couple of broken windows now, and I'm seriously not kidding when I say that.

It was the perfect end to my 30th birthday celebrations, a day I'll never ever forget. If any of my fellow Team Callaway members find themselves near Colchester, feel free to give me a shout for a round.

Oh and trying to hit a putter with joe was awesome. Joe called a top the first time.....I topped it. Joe called a top the 2nd time....I topped it....and then the 3rd time, I made sure I stayed down on that thing as long as possible, I HIT IT!! It might have gone half a mile in the air and only about 70 yards but I hit it which he seemed quite impressed with.

He didn't however seem all that impressed when I said that I prefer sinking a long putt to hitting a long drive....I've since apologized to him on Twitter.
