Hey Everyone

I recently had a fitting experience for a new driver and the Callaway Epic came out with the best results for me. The driver looked great behind the ball and it felt really nice to swing.

Slightly more distance and better dispersion.....however the shaft that provided the best results for me was an Accra FX250.....this shaft comes with the lovely upcharge of £250...! Given the cost of the standard driver I certainly can't justify over 700 quid on a driver.

Having looked at the Callaway website they offer quite a lot of shafts as standard with the Epic with no upcharge.

So I wondered if anyone had any experience of the Epic with one of the standard shafts? or if any really clever people know of a more affordable option than the Accra..!

Cheers all

i suppose you could look for that shaft online, get it fitted with a Callaway attachment. Then flog the stock shaft. you might end up saving £50 plus doing it this way, as you have the option to sell the shaft that comes with the driver.

On ebay there is that exact shaft (in reg flex) for £105- might need to pay bit of tax on top though as from US.

Or you could try phoning round tour X, golf principles, pure forged etc and see their prices.

Can't comment on feel as I've not used any of them, but just going from the specs of the Accra (and it also depends to a degree what flex they fitted you for) and what I can find of the std Epic shafts, I'd say Kuro Kage Black TiNi 50 / Diamana M+ Green 50 / UST Recoil ES450.

They all claim to be mid (ish) launch and spin, lightweight and high torque.

Did you not try any of the stock shafts at the fitting? If you did, did any of them display similar numbers to the Accra to not justify the £250 upcharge? Did the pro you do the fitting with not recommend a cheaper alternative which would still suit your game. Its really hard to say what is similar as a lot of the shafts are down to feel. They have different characteristics which will change the ball flight etc but ultimately a shaft will feel different to each person which will have an impact on your decision.

Why didn't you just tell the fitter your price range when he fitted you? Then you wouldn't have had to bother even swinging something you didn't want to pay the cash for.
That's what a good fitter should do IMO, it's what titleist done when I went for a fitting with them.
Seems a bit strange to have a fitting for something you don't want to pay the money for then trying to find an equivalent. Did he tell you how much the shaft cost at the fitting session?

I have an Accra FX in my M2, got it from eBay for £45. Was fitted for the dymatch version (predecessor to the FX) so gave it a go and love it.

They are great shafts, expensive to buy new but relatively rare/unheard of so resale values are all over the place.

£700 odd for a driver is good chunk. I'd have to use it and love it for a long time to justify that.

i have had the epic since day one and its the best driver i have ever had, its the real deal. I try every new driver every year and none has come close to the epic. I have a slow swing speed sub 80 mph and struggle to hit the driver over 180. have shot scope now and can track my drives now and now most of my drives are 200 to 220.

I had my longest driver ever yesterday, it was wind aided and hit a slope i normally never get near and the drive went 267 yards. Was only a wedge into a green that i normally have to hit a hybrid or 6 iron into.

I got fitted into a 13.5 epic with the t800 shaft in 5.5.

Stupid thing is i thinned the wedge and still took a 5
