Alright lads?

As some of you will know im fairly knew to golf, the clubs I use are an old set my dad had lying around so not ideal to say the least! I am interested in picking up a decent second handset for as cheap as possible (21 years old, mortgage, kid, money is a bit tight)

Was wondering if any of you had any advice on buying a second hand set, which makes to look out for, where to look etc, im about 6 foot tall so is there any certain legnth clubs i should be looking at?

Any advice would be appreciated..

Look at the for sale and wanted on here!

Alternatively, go and see what's on offer (range, AG) and post the details on here.

At 6 foot, don't be afraid of buying a set that's 1/2 inch longer. It won't be as good as custom fit, but it's a safe option.

Try somewhere large like an American Golf or similar as they tend to have a fairly large selection of 2nd hand clubs in stock at any given time. You should also get a chance to try these (ideally on a range if possible or at the very least in anet with launch monitor equipment) to see if they suit. I'm just on 6 foot snd can get away with standard length shafts off the shelf although my Callaways were fitted 1 degree upright but that was courtesy of a testing session at a demo day

Hello, mate. I've got a set of irons you can have for the price of postage. I bought these a while ago after being out of the game for a while.

They're only from 5-sw but they got me playing from 28 to 17. Good set of "beginner clubs".

I'm the same height as you so they'd be fine.

Also,if you're after a second hand set of clubs, you could spend what you were willing to spend on some decent woods.

I take it you're right handed....

Send me a PM,mate.

Hello, first time poster here.

Have you tried e-bay? You don't mention anything in particular, but you can pick up just about anything on there, I bought pretty much all of my current gear on e-bay. There are a couple of good shops on there "3 Balls Golf" in the US and "ESC Golf" in the Uk, I've bought from both.

Unfortunately a lot of people now have a deep dsitrust of Ebay as there have been instances where they thought they were buying legitimate goods from a reputable source only to find they were fakes. Good quality fakes but fakes none the less

Personally I never buy anything golfing off e-bay as I can normally get it faster and cheaper from either my pro or my local AG. If I was looking for a set of clubs I'd want to go and try them out before I parted with my cash

Hi Homer,

I agree, there are many disreputable sellers on there. It does depend on what you are looking for though, new gear is more likely to be fake than second hand. Also, it depends on the brand, some brands like Titleist and Callaway are more likely to be copied than others.

I guess I was just lucky, my Cobra irons were bought new from a shop in the US, and even with import duty and shipping were a saving over buying them here. My driver, hyrid, putter and sand wedge were all bought second hand in very good condition from the dealers I mentioned above, and were all very good value for money.

I appreciate that I took a chance with them in the first instance, I knew the risk when I did it, but the cost saving was very good if they were obtained at the auction price I was willing to pay. I would be happy to go back to these particular dealers again, therefore happy to name them. Would equally be happy to name and shame them if the situation was reversed. I'm not specifically pushing e-bay but Newfish was looking for clubs as cheap as possible, so thought it worth a mention.

EBay = swings & roundabouts

I know loads of people who have bought second hand clubs and grabbed bargains on EBay, I must also point out that many who sell gear on this site end up selling for less on EBay than they offer to forum users. I bought my MX19s from EBay, I got them custom fitted to the specs I needed, I got a free towel thrown in and also I got Mizuno New decade grips added FOC all for £249 (that was about Feb), also though I was stung by fakes on EBay but I got my money back and really I should have known better.

I have found AG second hand gear expensive and the staff uninterested in selling it, they are more interested in flogging gear that has sat on the shelf been hit by every man and his dog and try and flog as new gear at top wack!! imho selling gear that has been used by other people on the range is selling ex demo gear and so should be reduced, I heard a sales man complain to a customer that because he used a driver in the bay he wasn't entitled to a new one if he bought it, the same guy tried it on me but when I was half way out of the door he offered to order a new one which hadn't been scratched and used.

GolfBidder are very good in terms of quality, you pay about 5% more but they offer a top notch service second to none.
