Buggies

I played sunday morning. My sunday playing partner is 23 years young and fit as a fiddle. Yet he still gets a buggy from time to time. This sunday was one of them days. He rode the buggy by himself, as I simply refuse to ride in one. I play golf for a bit of exercise and a chance to have a bit of a laugh on the way round. Buggys just kill the round

I cannot see for one second how people can take the mick out of young people using power assisted trollies. It kills my back carrying for 18 holes or even pulling a trolley and there is no way I am going to risk going through 400-500 pounds worth of physio again when I can get help in gettin what I need round the course. People may be active but backs are sensitive things and one little thing can muck you up for a long while. My back trouble came from lack of flexibility and when I put my back out at age of 15 and not being able to move for a few days is not a nice feeling and I would not contemplate doing that again carrying a bag round.

I have thought about carrying my bag and then I realise what happened and I think why be so stupid and put myself through that again. I would rather enjoy my golf which is why I took it up, than to just carry and act like the big man because I carried my golf clubs 18 holes today and someone else took a buggy or a powakaddy. Its just as bad as the people who say I can hit my ball a lot further than you.

editted to add : its a shame power assisted trolleys seem like you are getting all the gear for sake of it. If they was cheap and reliable then I bet 95% of people would use them, because it would become the norm.

If the weather is definitely dry and relatively warm I will carry as I wouldn't need the extra gear (waterproofs, windproof, brolly, extra towel, etc....)

A few tees, pitch mark repair tool, 3 balls, clubs and a towel.

And for those who put the earth and teh sun in their bags but use a trolley I thinks your backs at more risk stretching into the car boot to lift such a heavy cumbersome item out. Where as a few clubs and minimal kit puts very little strain on your muscle or skeleton.

Saying that If the weather is bad I will pack a little more, use a trolley only for the fact I can put my brolley up and keep free hands to look after my clubs etc before shots.

Back when i was a kid I would caddie in the morning then play 18 in the afternoon both saturday and sunday.

Back when I was a kid, (well mid 30's actually), I could go to Scotland with my mates and play 36 holes a day for 6 days on the trot. Carrying. And enjoy it.
I could also play a football match on a Saturday afternoon, have a night on the lash, play football again on Sunday morning and bang out 18 holes in the afternoon. And enjoy it.
Now?
Even using a GoKart I struggle to play 36 a day. There is no way I could do it 2 days on the trot, let alone 6!!
Old age. It catches up with all of us.

Can't believe some of the bile i've read aimed at people who use buggies, but then, i've never really played golf in the UK (maybe 5 rounds?)

Over here, your buggy is included in your green fee, and everybody heads out in them. It's a decent way to keep the sun off your head while waiting for playing partners to have a hit, also stops you getting dehydrated.

I can't imagine playing golf at my course and walking - even if temperature allowed. I'm mid 20's and i'd sooner jump in a buggy, have a chat with partners between shots, hit the ball - and move on. What's the problem with that?

I play football, go running and walking, lift weights occasionally - that's enough exercise for me. I play golf to do just that, play golf. Putting the ball in the hole. The whole 'walking' to savour the round thing doesn't appeal. It takes 4 hours in a buggy, walking would take 5 I reckon, and i'd be absolutely ruined after it. What's the point?

Maybe when i'm older and can't play football, golf will become number one, and i'll use it as a means of fitness, in which case i'll walk. But even then i'd get a trolley for the clubs. Why risk damaging your shoulders/neck/back and not being able to swing?

Just my ten pence worth, cheers.

In certain circumstances (Vilamoura in August) buggies are a necessity and with ice compartments filled up with cans of ice tea an absolute life saver.

Personally I use a trolley in the summer as the lifting, dropping of a carry bag 70+ times for 4 rounds a week started to take its toll.

There is nothing finer than striding off down the fairway after you've striped your tee shot down the first. No buggy wold be worth losing that feeling for.
