I have recently applied to work at the 2012 British Open and I was wondering if anyone had been involved in working at the event in the last few years. Your experiences, what job you did and would you recommend doing it again.

I thoroughly hope to be involved in some capacity. I have attended the last 2 tournaments at Lytham and St Annes when Tom Lehman and David Duval won.

Looking forward to everyones feedback. I live in Bradford but will be staying in Liverpool, I know its still a bit of a trek but Im not sure how much expenses i will be getting so dont want to book a hotel if it wont cover the costs.

This is my first post having just joined Golf Monthly.
I have just turned 30 and I havent played in 8 years. I played a par 3 course and went round in 79, didnt 3 putt once. Does that sound a good start to hopefully a lifetime in the game.

Thanks

There is a lot of standing around in one place - make sure you dress for conditions and bring a flask on cold days. Thats my experience from Birkdale.

Try to get on the buggies, ferrying the players around if you can - it is the sweetest plum.

My mate does it every year, he told me this year, all the marshals are beibg kitted out in Ralph Lauren gear! No idea if that's bs or not...

welcome to the forum and back to the game, sounds a good idea to see some golf FOC and hopefully your expenses will cover a hotel maybe worth gambling on a cheap travelodge premier inn even if its half way will save you money on petrol?
have fun.

Welcome to the forum! I'll be marshalling again hopefully, I think we are doing the 8th hole. It's great fun being involved in any capacity and you should get plenty of time off to enjoy the golf too. A rucksack is essential for extra clothing, food and drink etc (prices inside are a little steep). A small pair of binoculars come in handy too.

HI Rich, whereabouts do you play in Bradford?

Ive only just started playing again and Im not a member anywhere. I play a little at Gotts Park, Fardew in Bingley, sometimes go up to Bradley Park just for M62 at huddersfield. Mainly where I can get a cheap round in.

Whereabouts do you play?

Yes same, not a member anywhere but play Fardew and played Gotts Park a couple of weeks ago. Mainly play at Shay Grange, West Bradford or Calverley.

Yeah Im thinking of playing Calverley as I know a few members there. Whats Shay Grange like now? I played it when it was just being built, drainage wasnt very good.

Hahahaha - superb Dodger
RichMatt - make sure you dont call it the British Open at any interview! ;)

I normally call it The Open but I thought I would put British so no-one would think I was being biased towards the Greatest Golf Tournament in the World.

Its basic :D but its an ok 9 holer, if you use it for what it is. The shop though is very good now, just had a refit and created loads more space, plus the guys down there are decent enough.

Our club is down to marshall one of the holes filled in a registration form from the R&A about 3 weeks ago.

Hi Richmatt

I was always under the illusion that these elite positions where handed out to clubs that had applied to help out to marshal and then got members to volunteer for their services:confused:....

Prob wrong, always am:o,but good luck if you do get picked.....

I know some1 who is a member of the Hesketh and they got to marshal the par 3 12th at Birkdale, they got some good gear for their efforts..
