Bristol Courses

Hi Guys,

Haven't been on the forum in a while, looking for a good recommendation for a Bristol course that would suit a low hcapper but also be forgiving enough for a new starting female?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Filton GC, very welcoming, nice course, and a very good deal on membership prices for next year. Quite a few good players so you'll have some good opposition for the lowest gross and scratch knockouts etc. There are also 3 teams in local leagues playing scratch 4somes. Off 8 you'd be looking at 2nd or 3rd team if you were interested.
I've been a member there for a year and a bit and am staying put.

There is an active ladies section, though I have heard they are a bit more cliquey than the men's, might be a bit unfair that though.

Where are you in Bristol? I found convenience plays a big factor in selecting somewhere, particularly with brizzle traffic. If you want to play summer evenings then convenience is king.
I live in bishopston and Filton is mega convenient. If I lived somewhere else I would be looking for most convenient option that still ticks the boxes.

I would second Filton. Nice holes, some good challenges but not too penalising for the higher handicappers wayward ones. And from my time as a member - a cracking good club.

And convenience in choosing the club when I lived in Bristol was important. I was working in BAe (lived in Redland and St Andrews) and my office looked out over the 6th fairway - me and buddy would park in the club car park in the morning and walk to the club for an evening knock after work or when we took a 4pm flexi-time early knock-off

I used to play in the 1st or more often 2nd team in the league scratch foursomes - really developed my love of the format - cracking stuff.

My best mate is a member of The Players Club - but he lives out in Sherston so that's more of a trek from Bristol - but a good track.

If you are on the north side of Bristol then I'd suggest taking a look at Thornbury. A very good and welcoming club with a lovely 18 hole, plus a par 3 course, driving range and well stocked pro shop.

As others have said, it depends where in Bristol you are located.
Bristol is quite a big city, & the traffic can be horrendous a peak times.
There are some cracking courses in & around Bristol, personally I would go for one of the private members clubs over the corporate ones.
Filton is a superb club, with no tee booking times ( great for a beginner) & has already been said is very well priced next year.

The Players ( a bit corporate & penal for a new player?)

Thornbury is great for beginners and generally in good nic. Not very challenging for a low hc. I play off 6 and work in Thornbury so our work golf comps are played there and off yellows the highest I scored over 10 rounds (2 per month may-sep) was 2 over.

I havent played Thornbury for years but have our christmas party there this weekend so we have arranged a game sunday. As said by most posting it does depend on where you live/work as to where to play, but theres a good selection all over so hopefully youll find a club to suit :thup:

I nipped up at lunch to do some putting and it is in great condition at the mo. Have my old football club golf get together on the 27th up there.

going back to OP question - the Bristol (near cribs) has a good ladies section and is also enjoyable for a low hc player.

The Players club is ok for you but some long carrys for a new player ........some ok courses in Taunton and the Kendershire , 27 holes there ............................................................EYG
